Silly question about magnets
Would there be any potentially of adverse consequences of using magnets in my kit? I'm coming up with an idea that should make my kit at least marginally pilfer deterent.

Re: Silly question about magnets
Since they SHOULD NOT be any metal in the paint, I can't see why. I am sure others will weigh in.

Re: Silly question about magnets
I would just say that, depending on the strength of the magnets, you should be careful with your electronics (cell phone, camera, etc.) and just make sure they aren't stored in the same place as the magnetic stuff just so you don't lose any of your photos, etc.

Re: Silly question about magnets
I don't think so. BUT, I will share a weird experience I had once.
I used to keep my personal makeup (eyeshadows etc) in a magnetized palette (yabycosmetics.com). I dropped the darn thing one time and busted a black eye shadow inside the palette. Well, wouldn't you know it but the pulverized black powder was sticking to the circles of the magnets in the palette.
I believe this is because the black cosmetic colorant used is usually Iron Oxide: TKB Trading link to Black Pigment
So, weird story but I don't think you'll have any issues : )

Re: Silly question about magnets
Thanks guys! I didn't think there would be, but I DO know that I'm going to have to be diligent about not leaving my phone nearby when I paint. The magnets are going to be attached to the bottom of each paint pot and I'm affixing a thin steel sheet to the bottom of the containter the paints will be put in. It's primarily so that I can transport my paints securely, keep kids from picking them up (yes...you need to apply light pull to get them up AND be able to put my paints in both the top and bottom of my carry case without them "meeting" each other in transit. I'm using the Neodium magnets so they are strong enough...well, I had 50 of them on a sheet of steel and when I accidently passed over the sheet with another sheet I was holding the pull was strong enough to slam the two pieces of metal together... on my hand...my painting hand. Yeah...

Re: Silly question about magnets
My MAC eyeshadow palettes are metal and the refill cakes have magnets on the back...
Good idea, but no points for originality!!

Re: Silly question about magnets
I'm strange enough that I can forgo the originality point, what I want is to keep my rainbow cakes where I put them and to make the parents that like to pick up your stuff without asking stop and realize that it must be difficult to pick up for a reason...either that or that your paints are made from particles straight from a black hole.
Either one makes my toes tingle.

Dark matter.... is this paint safe? Yes... but expect your child to disappear shortly into a point of unknown singularity and reappear in twenty years with two heads. But yes, it is safe to paint with.

Re: Silly question about magnets
If we're talking about the teenager, I don't see how having two head in twenty years is any different from having his head up his butt in 2010...besides in twenty years, I'll hopefully be so far into senility that it won't matter...
Dark matter is your friend... repeat...

Hiding from ourselves...and each other...
are you kidding me? It's bad enough I think I'm psychotic...then you meet people who are crazier than you are!
This is not a place for the normal people...you have to be at least marginally insane...
Which is why...
Shannon fits in so beautifully...

Re: Silly question about magnets
Wow, LJ... that's some serious anti-theft system you are planning. See, I thought I'd do it like the hospitals do... they low-jack babies so no one can boost them. Maybe hide the electronics at the bottom of the rainbow cake, and if the cake gets too close to the edge of your tent, steel bars come down, alarms sound, and ninjas rappel down from ropes.
But that might be a little much.
