So, if you have raised your rates (ever!), let the rest of us know how it went.

Let's encourage each other to no longer pander to the bargain shoppers. We want the best clients!

I just ordered some new banners from vistaprint for displaying my sample photos.... I know I can't switch the pictures out now as I get better, but even if I only use these for a year or two and have to switch them later, it's not so bad (it was about $60 for both, outdoor fabric, and rush shipping so I can use them next Saturday). I don't put prices to them on here because I do sometimes change my prices for different events.

Did you have another job when you first started face painting?

I'm getting antsy and wish I could devote more time to building up this business and my hope is to be full time by next year. The numbers are looking good.

However, my family was arguing about the fact that when you do one party, the word might get around, and people will expect you to price their parties the same as they did for the original party.

So my questions to you all (if you are comfortable with it) are these:

How much do you make in a year?

Do you have children?

How much time does facepainting take away from your family?

Is this your primary income or secondary?

I've (I think!) got a crazy client who has already booked, decided she didn't like the idea of me cashing a deposit before the event, cancelled, and now wants to rebook. She had hired me to paint and my contractor to twist - and decided that she has a friend painting now, and only wants me. Cool. She mentions that everything is the same as before, and since I was down for painting on our old contract, I said, that's great, ...

Just wondering how you came up with it and how you make sure you are the only one.

I went it about it a bit backwards. I was looking around Vista Prints at the pre-designed logos and saw one I liked. It looked like swirls and curls and thought "There are a lot of swirlys and curls in face painting." Viola. I used the logo until I got my car decal done and the designer came up with something wonderful. As to protecting it. Who knows. I got my dot com at least.

Since returning from Fab., one thing that I noticed that myself and other face painters might need assistance with is writing a business plan, which is the first step to any successful business. How can you accomplish your goals if you have none?? LOL

I found this website and thought this might be a good place to start and I wanted to share it with others.

At birthday parties, I try to have all of the names memorized during the face painting part, so that I'm able to use them when I'm doing balloons - points earned! At events, I usually don't even bother - they're only there for a few minutes and then they're gone. Or rather, I will try to ask names, but I won't worry about remembering them.

At any rate, memorizing during parties = pretty easy. (Unless they're all unusual names...then everyone's "sweetie," haha)
