Simple question -- what are the advantages of a round rainbow or split cake? It seems to me that there would be disadvantages, in terms of loading a sponge or brush, but perhaps I'm missing something?

When you have a palette with round and square holes (like the one from Michael's), do you make your splits randomly or do you plan for example to put the ones you are going to sponge in the round holes and the ones for a brush in the square? Or am I over complicating this?

Is it just that ...

I recently tried out these charms and they are pretty cool - a new idea/product to use to up-sell your face painting services.

I've written about them on my blog at http://shannonfennell.wordpress.com/ with a couple of photos.

For pay-per-face painters I think they would go over really well with the older teens and young adults.

Basically they are small dangling charms that you attach with a small adhesive tab and you can face paint, use tattoos, etc. to embellish and hide the adhesive ...

I just received my copy of Face Painting with Clash: A beginner's guide to face painting with Rainbow Cakes by Anna Lee Wilinski.

Although it's listed as 'beginner', I found some very good ideas and tips. I especially liked the Butterfly Eyes and Tiger.

Overall reaction to product:

Positives

1. Shows tools and techniques

2. Nice, clear pictures

3. Overall, easy to follow

Negatives

1. Stack Them: the instructions here were a bit confusing for me (but that's just me)

I have been reading this book and thought I would share my thoughts on it with you.

This is obviously not just about face painting, but many aspects of being a party entertainer. That being said, while there are sections that I don't use at the moment (magic, catering, puppetry), it doesn't mean there aren't valid ideas in there to add to what I do or that I may not decide to use them in the future. This book offers a lot of ideas for working with different age groups as the same things ...

I recently bought this one, a one inch. And I love it! Its so very handy for lots of things! In a short period of time I started using it instead of my sponges for bases on my face. It works very well for blending and shading, and its of course a big brush so it works fast. If you want to make a glaze on the face instead of a full covering color its so very easy with this one. You can go from fully covering to glaze (to create effects), put another color glaze over it etc.

Now my review at this point:

The stencil sizes are amazing. When it says "medium:, I would describe them more like large. The details and designs are outstanding.

This week I had the great fortune to be able to attend two of renowned face & body artist Pashur House’s conventions in neighboring Columbus Ohio. Admittedly, I was probably more nervous than most for three very good reasons:

The workshops entailed 2 days of (15+ hours) of intense study under the tutelage of Pashur.

2. This was to be my first jaunt into the formal training arena of this art form.

3. Pashur was going to be there and observing my woeful attempts to be artistic.

Review: Mark Reid's New Signature Gel Glitter- rated a 10!!!

I took Mark's Class at the Vienna, Va Jam last Sunday and as he was using bling to outline the demo butterfly, he mentioned that it is his new ultrafine Gel Glitter. I asked him if he had any spares and bought two on the spot!

I found out that Mark Reid's new Signature Gel Glitter will be debuted along with his Signature Brushes this week in the Mehron booth at FABAIC!

All Positive Review:

Mark's Gel Glitter (used like liquid bling) is ultrafine & the long applicator tube is ...

Hi all! My first review

I received this the other day. I have to admit, I ordered it and then read a horrible review and was so paranoid!

First of all, the layout is really nice. There is a good introduction followed by an area that discusses tips and tricks. They are right in the order they need to be, and I like that a lot. Nothing is worse than working through something and then finding tips later.

Next comes the section on how to make 3D items. While the book is about jewelry, ...

Has anyone tried this paint yet?? Any good? I'm considering buying it.

I always have parents who come up to me and ask, "How long will your paints last?" And when I say it comes off with soap and water these certain parents grab the kids arm and drag them away. Thought maybe this would be a good palette to have in those situations or just in general if someone wants an arm, back or leg design to last days.

Ok, so I was super excited to get this one in the mail because tattoos and tribals are requested a lot when I'm painting; sadly, I am horrible at them (yes I have the Tribal Muse workbook). Anyways, my overall reaction is a positive one!

Positives:

1) This is a bare bones DVD. No marketing, no fluff, no filler. Just step by step painting. You pick the design you want and that's what you get!

2) Mark is always SO clear with his instructions, and he takes his time showing the techniques so ...

But turned out to be only smaller sizes and not the metallics/ new colours..

Anyway they also had the DFX books (I forget the name but was at least 2 of them) and on the back cover with 2 other painters was 1 of the Wolfes. Yay, I thought, I had the 1st 3 Wolfe Cheat books and they were lovely, hopefully these new DFX ones would be similar as they 'have' the Wolfe twins now.

BIG disappointment; the quality ...

Cons:

•The wording on some steps is fuzzy

•Several of the faces add a full base when it is unnecessary

•I’m not a huge fan of the style of some of the paintings

Positives:

Are Wolfe and DFX paints the same? They come in nearly identical containers and I have been told the consistency is very similar. I need to put in a new order; mostly to replace my metallic colors and was thinking about DFX this time instead of Wolfe.

Can anyone tell me how well DFX paints blend? I was told that most wolfe colors don't blend well, which is why I have stayed from most of them. I like their metallic and their white, but I don't use anything else. Also, their white. I like that ...

Hiya,

I recently purchased this from Silly Farm. And must say at $25 it was a good value.

Positives

1. Great to watch the actual brush stroke motion.

2. Lots of designs demoed

3. Reasonable Price

Negatives

1. It rarely showed the actual ABC she was using and some of them are clearly not the ones available yet, thus making it difficult to duplicate.

2. Too many Silly Farm plugs

3. The video production could be better, but for $25, it is still a good ...

This is an okay review. I could not help myself when I saw the wonder pallet at silly farm. Yes, an impuse buy. Friday is free shipping. The stars were aligned....

It is what is described on the website. The only difference with mine is in place of the 6 well container, silly farm sent me a 13 well container. Six have the split colors and the rest are empty. (YEAH!)

The DVD that comes with it shows basic beginner uses. Just alright.

The paints are of okay consistance however ...

Make-up artist magazine

Nobody talked about this magazine yet, so I thought I should open a thread for it.

http://www.makeupmag.com/

It's one of my favorite "overall" makeup magazine. It's not about Facepainting but mostly about movie, special effects, beauty, etc. They always feature current movie makeup so it's very up to date. Lots of interviews with pros makeup artists.

It'd be even better if they'd have more tutorials and include a space for the facepainting artists. Pfff! :p

Snaz Pro-Palette 22 color palette(w/ hard palette)

Okay, I didn't buy this palette, I won it. I had to pick something! haha...

Good points:

-I like the 30ml size containers, they are big enough to fit my sponge and large brushes into

-I like having a lot of colors all in the same holder

-The palette is the new hard one.. It's really just the regular thin one, but it's been flipped over and filled with resin to make it hard. It's definitely hard, but it's heavy!

Bad points:

-You can't pick the colors that you get in it... ...
