Get the sponge fairly wet with paint and and lightly scratch across the surface. Layer it on with darker and lighter shades. You use just the edge and apply zero pressure. You just want to graze the skin.

Go to the pet store and get an open cell sponge filter from the aquarium department. (They have them in different sizes & you can choose --and even cut larger ones down so you have a few). That helps a lot with what Whitney posted (& is cheaper than buying a stipple sponge elsewhere.)

Scruffy brushes.... old brushes that are splayed... rub them hard on a towel or rough surface so they get matted and really scruffy with hairs sticking out. They are great for fur... just lightly swipe on a cake and flick on the skin with a light touch.

Or a fan brush, with the dry-brushing technique, lightly stroked over the face, for fine fur lines.

Base of light sponging, whispy uneven strokes with a rake brush, layering, light light strokes, colour variations, I also use a badass leopard print stencil for texture and glitter...of course... Here is a fur collar I did the other day that looked pretty soft in person...
