Using display photos from a book

Post by SaraM on Mon Mar 26, 2012 11:16 am

I have a question, and I think I already know what the answer is, but I thought I would get other opinions. I need some display photos for new designs I haven't had an opportunity to get photos of yet...would it be considered wrong or in poor taste to use professional photos from a guide book, like a Wolfe book, if it clearly said the work was not my own and I gave full credit to the book and artist??

I'd definitely recommend against using anyone's pictures except your own, ESPECIALLY from face painting books.

Those books have a copyright, and probably cannot legally be reproduced. Plus you'll probably end up with a bunch of disappointed kids if they expect a Wolfe face and get something different.

For my display boards, I use a face template and Illustrator to draw my designs. They look really nice. You can also print off the face templates and use markers or pencil crayons to add your designs.

Here are some templates:

Okay thanks..that's what I already thought...I guess I was hoping everyone would say "that sounds like a great idea!!" and change my mind haha, even though I knew that wouldn't happen

what I would do is say to someone, "do you like bunnies? it's not up on the samples but, would you let me try a brand NEW design on you and take your picture for my samples??" (ask mom if it's ok to use their picture of course)

You can also paint on paper or right onto a pice of foam core, it works just fine too! There are several templates (check out About.com) for plain faces, and there are several threads on this forum with files, you can draw, or paint your faces and use them as display, then take pics as you go, just like Perry suggested.
