Is there a good tutorial for flames? I'm reeeaalllly bad at them but I've gotten lots of requests for them. It just always looks funny to have an arbitrary mottle of flames sitting on a cheek or hand. Is there a way to embellishe them up a bit to look more ... uh... chic?

Look for car customizing images - lots of flame on hotrods!!

And I'm always a little stumped by kids who want "flames".... I usually make them "coming out of" the nose, eyes or mouth... cause it looks silly just sitting there!

I still like butterflies because I like to try and make each one different. It's a fun game that I play with myself to make each one different and then to do them as fast as possible!

Lady Jayde...

I just put this together. Hope it helps! I agree about them coming out of the nostrils, eyes and or a dragon's mouth! Makes them much more interesting!

Heather, that's great! Thanks for sharing. I do my flames a little differently, but I love the final product with the blending.

I make them coming out of somewhere as well...random flames on an arm...ooookay...whatever floats your boat.

Just wanted to help anyone that's never done flames. I used to do mine a bit differently too (and poorly) until Mark showed us that technique.

It works and can be altered. The main thing is the 'shape' to the fire/flame and the blending of several colors to give you depth.

I have a 'flaming football' and a 'flaming soccorball' stencil...that does look cool! Very Happy

Thank you Heather. The ones I do take much longer to do and don't look as good. I get lots of requests for the blue flames. Once one boy sees it they all want it.

Here are some of my more recent 'favorites' with the boys! Strangely, I've not done one spiderman except for last Halloween! I do not get the usual stuff. I do TONS of Taekwon do 'Hank' guys...but usually lots of the kids from our Dojang are at my events!

Here is a 'Hank' which could work for kids in Karate too..boys even like it in rainbow with glitter!:

Helms and Crowns:

Dragons of ANY kind...tribal and simple:

The Mark Reid Style Serpent/Dragon Face and the usual Tiger face in red/orange and other colors:

Fell free to use any of these to work from and change to suit your style! The TKD 'Hank' I used a sticker that had the kicker design and traced it onto some vellum (translucent, plastic) paper. Then I cut the shape out to leave a 'stencil'. I then sprayed the back with some 'stencil tak' and I keep it on a piece of saran wrap. It makes the basic shape REALLY fast when they want a rainbow or 'red/white/blue' color and I use my multi color cakes. I then outline in Wolfe black freehand and add the neck collar and belt and 'black stars' or 'POW!' kick explosions as I tell the kids! hehe..Like old fashioned Batman TV show! Sometimes I do the belt in their actual rank color (ie, blue, purple, red). If it's just a plain white dobok (gi) color, I just freehand the guy. But the stencil gives you crisp lines!

Good luck with getting some boy designs ready to go. I find girl designs much easier as they usually want eye swirls and curls, butterflies, flowers and 'pretty girly things'. I don't mind doing the boy stuff...but I want to have as much variety as the girls have and offer them stuff that's not too gorey if mom and dad don't want them having it! I do ALOT of church events and usually am 'stiffled' on what to offer boys that the 'elders' will accept!

Yes that is the flames Mark taught us a couple of weeks ago. He also put them on paper for us to practice with. I laminated mine and have been practicing every since.

He's gonna be here in Colorado on Nov. 7th and 8th...think he's teaching 'girl's stuff' one day and more 'boy's stuff' the next. I think I might have to go again just to watch him paint! Kinda expensive, but you always pick up more and more ideas just by watching techniques in person! Very Happy

Now to justify the $350!

Heather,
Thanks so much for the flame tutorial!! I struggle with flames.

As far as popular boy designs, I do a simplified version of that Silly farm flame mask that aprilmoonflower posted and it is my all time requested boy design.

I leave out the black on the eyes and "mean" frown creases and it looks like a super hero.
Here's the only pic of it I have handy, though I usually do it better...

I do the flame mask too and I also leave the eyes without the black (but my 'fire' cake has more orange and white and slightly less red and black). I love it because it's super quick and easy to do with practice! If I find a picture I'll post it.

Re: top designs for boys?

One of my favorites with the boys is my "Ripped Robot". Its a partial-robot face that covers one eye and looks like someone ripped back the fake skin to expose a robot underneath. It is soooo easy and so impressive.

Steps are as follows:

1. Paint a free form shape (loosely representing a soft inverted triangle) over the eye and eyebrow reaching over to the nose and down to the upper cheek using a silver metalic color (the silver by Paradise covers very nicely).

2. Draw random horizonal and vertical lines in a patchwork type pattern. This represents the seams the the metal robat face.

3. Put small dots along the "seams" similating rivits.

4. Outline the area in black.

5. Re-outline the area in a nice blood red. Feel free to allow a few droplets of "blood" to drip down onto the face.

6. Your done, takes less than 5 minutes start to finish.

4. Loosely outline the wound area with a nice blood red. This is would be where the "skin" was pealed back revealing the robot beneath.

I will try to find a pic of one an post it in my gallery.
