help me do a spiderman on dark skin

Post by Astrid on Thu Apr 19, 2012 11:15 am

I had the hardest time with spiderman on very dark skin, the red paradise was hardly noticeable. What red works best?

I've heard TAG Metallic Red works well, I know Snaz red doesn't show up well at all on dark skin.

I had the same problem this past weekend. I just put several layers of DFX red, which is NOT my favorite, because it dries and feels flaky. I should have gone with my TAG metallic red, but I was already committed.

PS. It was a Mario design, not a Spidey.

Tag metallic red didn't work for me. Best results are with Mehron Starblend power. Base with white starblend and use red paint on top for a true color red. Use large smoothie blender to apply the powder. I realize this is extra step so you may decide it's too much trouble but I've wasted money on just about every brand of red and wanted to save you the expenses.

I think you are talking about black skin, right? It is different from brown skin. My beautiful grand niece and nephew-in-law has agreed to let me show paints on them but they live in another city. Just need to find time to visit. Sorry, the photo is big. I don't know how to make it small.

I tried once with metallic and regular TAG and didn't work, WOLFE red works best but I don't have it anymore.

I know that when I airbrush tattoos on really dark skin I usually lay down a white base and then the colors...but there's no good way to do that with sponge and brush... I'd be interested to read the responses to this thread.

If someone has gorgeous, rich dark skin, and they want a Spidey Guy, I will lay down a thin layer of Kryolan Interferenz Bronze, or Interferenz Copper. If it is still wet, blot it with the dry part of your sponge. Then, sponge the red Wolfe, MAC or FAB (or whatever red you are using) over the metallic paint. It gives the red a little more "pop" or "zing".
I have tried using the silver and the golds as a bottom layer for the red, and that is okay for lighter skin. The silver or gold lighten the color too much and does not compliment the dark skin as much as the new metallic color I create with the bottom layer of copper or bronze and red over top.

Happy Painting!

I read somewhere that if you do a base of red, then add red starblends over it, the color will really pop over dark skin. I have yet to try it, but I plan on doing so eventually.

Add a bit of orange to the red. It doesn't show up at all but helps the red pop off of dark skin.

Metina - 1 year 8months later I just discovered this today and felt I had found a novel solution to my dark skin spidermen! I wish I had read this post earlier Very Happy.

Yes orange over red DOES work! I based with DFX red and then painted over with a snaz orange which I had pre-mixed with yellow to make it lighter. It worked perfectly. As Metina said, the orange doesn't show but just blends in and makes it pop.

I took pictures to share but still dont know how to attach pictures in messages

Nikki, if you go over it with a bit of orange, it will be more vibrant. Thats how my reds used to look on dark skin

So I know he's not as dark, but I really think it helps when you use a split cake. The other colors help give some depth. I've used this on really dark skin and the colors come out so beautiful and vibrant. And I use Snaz red in my split, not a brand you'd think I'd use, but I still really like this color best. I wouldn't use Snaz red on it's own, but with my split it works out perfectly.
