Re: Best brand for painting in EXTREME heat?

This is how I handled the heat and high humidity yesterday;

First of all, our booth is FUN-OLOGY 101 and we are 'professors of fun', so nothing is horribly serious to begin with. I have hypoallergenic baby wipes that were used to gently pat all the melted ice cream, sno cones, cotton candy off their faces and would loudly proclaim "Free face cleaning!" Then, I would ask the child if they wanted to be spritzed with water... only had one "no' all day long. Sometimes I even gave the mom a spritz if they wanted one... it was extremely hot & muggy. Almost every child that sat down was sweating profusely... it may have taken a bit of extra time but it was well appreciated

Starblends are impossible to apply dry in that kind of humidity if you are painting outside. I have sworn by them and still do - but only if the child is painted inside in a climate controlled area and then goes outside to play in the humidity. I had a man from Tennessee with his children say that he's used to mugginess down home but said it was ungodly muggy there at the BalloonFest yesterday.

So how did the big mama face painter hold up in that mess? I had two battery operated fans blowing directly up close to me all day long - one on each side of me... Otherwise I would have melted into a puddle of paint & glitter...

Checked out the forum before I went to a corporate gig in 90+ temps yesterday. I was hired by a family member for his customers "Family Picnic". When I looked up the location & realized it was by the ocean (in FL!), I knew I needed to start doing glitter tatts! For a hot & humid job I do use Mehron's Barrier spray after cleaning off the sweaty faces w/baby wipes. Yesterday, since the kids were all going swimming...it was glitter tatts 'till the last hr. My paints were fine (DFX, TAG, Wolfe & FAB). They sat in that heat for 3 hrs before I used them. The barrier spray was for the tweens & worked well on the one teen who was perspiring. It's in my kit for my regular gig @ a bounce house. Don't use it on lil ones faces, but agree w/Lynnie...if the face is too sweaty, paint the arm. I'd still use Barrier Spray on the arm either in high humidity/heat or the bounce house gig.

My booth partner was having a very difficult time getting the glitter tattoo stencils to stick on yesterday... both kids and adults were clammy from head to toe... and this was after she cleaned the area with alcohol and patted it dry with a paper towel!

Miss Ronnie, I'm brand new @ glitter tatts, 2 weeks practicing on grandkids & I started FPing last fall, so this was my 1st time outside in the heat. BOY, I was a little nervous. It turned out fine. To maybe address your non-sticking issue:
Could it have been because she was wiping off the alcohol &/or depositing tiny paper towel fibers? Maybe it just needs to dry on the skin, then proceed w/o touching it before applying stencil? I used alcohol squares (they have 70% Isopropyl) & either let them dry ("No touching!") or I fanned it w/my dollar store mirror. Then I peeled the backing off the stencils & they stuck. My big problem was the excess glitter wouldn't come off even though I have a stiff brush. Told them all to go swimming or wash off in the restroom & it would come off. Several rushed off & came right back w/nothing left but perfect glitter tatts.
***IMPORTANT: At the end of the day the temp had dropped a tad, a nice breeze was blowing & the humidity was slightly less. Guess what? The excess glitter brushed right off! Darn that humidity!!!

No, it was really THAT humid. I know the South is notorious for humidity, and so I am guessing that maybe human bodies are more conditioned to humidity down there...
But we Northerners were completely drenched in perspiration. Our Mardis Gras beads were leaving color stains around the kids and adults necks!!!!

All I know is that the first Starblend I tried to put on yesterday was the last.. even after cleaning, cooling and drying their skin they were still too moist for it.... it was just a big splotchy mess.

Ronnie, we had our booth out too this weekend (and the stilt walker at the balloon fest you were at is the boyfriend of one of my painters! lol). We didn't have issues getting glitter on people. Is it possible it was something else other than the humidity? A bad batch of glue maybe? You were only 40 min up the road from us, or so.

I will say that while southerners can talk about the humid, we get it just as badly up here. 92% humidity today with 91 degree heat, in the Great Lakes area of upper NYS. That extreme is not the domain of the south by a long shot- sadly. Were it up to me, they could have it all!!! ;-)

Amazing John!!!! He's so sweet! I made it a point to go say Hi to him on Saturday... he was almost directly across from us. Where were you set up at?

You know, I should learn to edit my rambling self on these posts. I honestly don't know if my booth partner patted the skin dry after the alcohol... I assumed she did. But I dunno, maybe the kids were playing extra hard and got extra sweaty... we were right in from of one of the horse rides and you had to pass our booth to get to the midway. I have no idea what else they offered for the kiddies. There were playgrounds, too, but I think the beach area was actually closed for the weekend.

I hate heat, but I hate humidity more. Mad

Thanks Lynnie!

I just got a membership to Sam's Club and will check out the paper towels and baby wipes.

Yes I will try the arm painting, I used to do it more when I was just starting, I felt more comfortable painting on the arm than the face.

It is funny that you mention that the Paradise formula has changed, I thought it was me. I am making a move to more Wolfe now.
Thanks for the info Smile

I have found that when glitter tattoos wont stick to sweaty skin, even after wiping with alcohol, the following method works wonders.
Dust the area with baby powder to absorb excess moisture. THEN wipe with an alcohol prep to remove baby powder.
THEN apply the stencil and proceed as usual.
This worked really well for me at my festival (same day as Ronnie's balloonfest, and same area... nasty humid that day)
It worked really well and baby powder is cheap.

Astrid - I no matter what the service face painting, airbrush face or tattoos, glitter tattoos, henna... if the skin is wet with sweat we clean with baby wipe, and/or dry with a paper towel then use a translucent or setting powder to dry the skin. For faces we powder along the brow line.
Four us it is cool today at 90 degrees and a hot wind at 10+ miles, but it is very dry here no humidity.
