Almost forgot this nightmare...

Post by Miss Ronnie on Sat May 12, 2012 10:43 pm

This is a good one because it threw me for a loop and had me a nervous Nellie....

A little girl sits in my chair and has an awful looking swollen thingy on one of her eyelids. Naturally, she wants the one eyed butterfly. I cannot paint on the other side because she has about a dozen beaded braids hanging down there. So I asked her about her eye... "Has that always been there, sweetie?" She says "yes" so I think, okay, it's just something she's had from birth and I need to treat her like any other child and not make a big deal out of it. She wanted the neon rainbow butterfly, not the powder Starblends. So I sponge it gently on. Then her bigger sister comes over and says "Oh no, no, no... Mama says she can't have anything on her eye 'cept her medicine"...

Face painter faints... but is quickly revived from water fountain drenching.

OH my goodness. Nightmare!!! That makes my stomach hurt for you. But, to be honest, "mommy" should have been there to insure that didn't happen if it was an issue. What did you do??? Baby wipe?

Gently, gently, gently with the baby wipes. Her sister stood there while I was wiping and said "She's gonna have stuff come out of that on her eye now..."

SAY WHAT?!!!

I asked if her mother was at the party and she said "No, but she's coming".

Ohmylordhelpme.... "Make sure you tell her that the face painter wants to take to her" (Mom never showed...gulp)

I wouldn't have. I would have handed her the wipe and told her to go and find her mom, so she could wipe it off, lowering my risk of developing some kind of infection. Also, this is a good example as to why I carry lysol wipes in my kit Wink

If mom didn't want her painted, or knew of the risks, she should have been there or told the host/hostess.

I don't carry lysol wipes, but I do carry the Wet Ones 99.9% antibacterial wipes.

I wasn't worried about myself catching anything since I clean my hands and use sanitizer after each customer.

I just didn't want to be responsible for her eye getting worse or infected. It seemed like it was a stye or maybe a boil of some sort.... very gross. I asked the appropriate question before I painted.

In hindsight, I will never make this poor judgement call again.
