Look what I made!

Post by JBax on Sun Sep 20, 2009 9:32 pm

Awed and amazed by the genius of the ice tube trays, I set out on the mission of finding the perfect and cheap sorter of brushes. I checked all sorts of large chain stores, Evil empires of capitalism, even Dollar stores. Nothing. Then I looked online and found them. Yay! Op... except I only found 2 (in the whole country?), and with shipping they were more than I cared to pay. I found the original makers, but they didn't sell them. It would appear as if they don't make them anymore (?) and have been replaced by horizontal silicone tube makers because apparently the ice was difficult to remove. Ugh!

So, what's a girl to do? Make her own! I went to a local hardware store, bought 2 tubes of 3/4" PVC pipe, "economy" pipe cutters (about $10, but if you already have a hacksaw or dremel you don't need one), and some PVC cement. I had my husband help me cut the PVC, some 6", some 5", and some 4", 21 pieces total, but it fits my space perfectly. I lightly sanded the edges that would touch, applied some PVC cement, and viola! I have a nifty brush holder. It doensn't have a bottom yet... haven't decided what to make the bottom out of yet... the plugs you can buy or leave it open, or cork. It's got some weight to it, but it's not super heavy (won't knock over easy). Cool thing is, I got to customize it to how I wanted to make it. Enjoy!

Love the brush holder! Genius! I've got PVC laying around everywhere. And the boyfriend is a plumber by trade! I've got to get that done!

I found it at The Container Store. I've also seen them at Flower Factory, so they have to be around. This was the first time I'd used it... funny thing is it doesn't hold water! It leaked into my lid. Gonna have to buy some silicone and seal the bottom. I didn't even put that much water in it! Just enough to wet the sponges and have a few inches in the bottom. Oh well.

This is AWESOME JBax! Mom and I have been experimenting with different methods of holding and sorting our brushes for like...EVER! Difinately gonna give this a go and see what she thinks, I'm already sold on the idea, lol. I could just see getting some plastic-friendly paint and painting them up so it goes better with our booth!

lol... I still haven't made a bottom for it, but I don't think I'm going to. It's got some weight to it, so it won't go anywhere easily, and I like that I don't have to worry about mildew at the bottom of my brush holder thingy.

Super simple... be sure to be in a Ventalated area, that glue is a doozy!

You know, I've got some extra PVC, I might make a back side to it... hmmm. I wonder if I'd even use a back side?

Jennifer, I wouldn't do a bottom if I were you. The ice tray thingy has a removable bottom and I love that for cleaning. If it's not necessary, I think you should just leave it off.

Woohoo, love this idea, my husband doesn't know it yet but he's going to be a busy boy this weekend. Thinking I'll have to go to the hardware store myself though or the trip will cost me power tools as well.
