Yes, but he apologized and took em down. That bothers me a whole lot less than the people who try to argue that there are no such things as internet copyright laws (or basic professional courtesy)

How does that work? Too busy to put up your own work on your FB page? Other people do it? Huh?

And these excuses of mixing up photos from their "inspiration" files with their own work??? CRAP... total crap... do they think we are all stupid?

I've got three jobs, take care of my mom, and do everything dealing with our house/yard... I still have time in the evenings to keep my online presence up-to-date myself.

And I know what I painted... what gets to be a problem is when other people paint my designs and I look at their photos and wonder "Did I paint that???" As there are photos taken of my work around town that show up and for the life of me I don't know if I actually painted it or not - mom usually says NOT as they aren't my usual, um, quality ...

yes!!! they do. I think they also assume that we don't talk too or know about each other. And if he ment this was an accident by others, he would have come across them when he posted the comment about the hours of hard work and painting them all!

and it appears he forgot to take down his profile pic which was also on deviant art, http://itashleys-makeup.deviantart.com/gallery/7535980#/d1chaw8
must have "forgot" he didn't do that as well!

Wow! The nerve to use a stolen picture for his facebook profile picture! I bet "someone else" posted that for him and he didn't know it either. Evil or Very Mad

Seriousy?! His profile picture?! Do you think a person can really be naive enough to not know this is completely inappropriate? When I first started painting, it was inside my sisters' store during busy times. Not knowing it was "wrong", I printed pictures off the internet to show people what they could choose from. (6 years ago. I know better now). But... at what point does someone think it's ok to post someone else's work on your website?? Obviously it implies it is your own. I don't get it.

Hmm... you'd have to check the Minions of the World United Union (the MOTWUU) to see if being face painted is allowed. It probably would be between "fabulate" and "fetch and carry" in the union handbook.

Re: Stolen Pics?

Post by veelux on Wed May 16, 2012 8:25 pm

ok, I have a question to throw out there...I have a book of "ideas" for the kids to choose from. I have used lots of my own photos, and also used some pictures that are not my own painting, but they are designs I want to/ and can do to give the kids the option. The reason I did this is because, I don't have time to take pics of all the painting I do, and I don't have a good image for each one yet. On the pages that have other peoples pictures, I have written "Some Images on the page are borrowed for idea purposes only" Am I completely wrong to do that? ...I am not claiming them to be mine, but I want to use them until I get enough photos of my own..its just hard to get them all...it takes a long time...
I feel bad now and maybe have to rethink the whole thing before I go out to the festivals this year...help...I see other painters using books they purchased to show the kids ideas...hmmmm....
thanks in advance

Re: Stolen Pics?

Post by Guest on Wed May 16, 2012 8:40 pm

Personally I do NOT think that is a good idea. Sure, keep the photos in a binder at home to practise from, but showing them to people is wrong. You didn't paint them and people don't read that you "borrowed" them.

I'm not a fan of using books either. Raises expectations and can get your books messy.

Either use photos of your own work, use coloured drawing of designs on templates of faces on paper, use simple line drawings or simply a list of words.

If you only have a few photos, so what? Idiots like me put up 180, but it isn't necessary! Use what YOU have and increase as you get them.

To get photos - sit down with your paints, a mirror and your camera and paint yourself and take photos.

My first display was a template of four faces I made per sheet, coloured with pencil crayons - yes, many were copies of other peoples' designs, but I drew them on the face templates my own way. Then painted them without refering to the drawings.

Once I had 10 -12 photos that were adequate I made a small photo display... then it grew and grew and grew as I got more, and better photos, I replace with nicer designs, cuter kids, etc.

I needed a specific display for a gig once so I spent a Sunday afternoon painting my face 17 times...

Ahh, yah, I did that to begin with...painted faces on paper, painted my arm, and a few neighbor kids..lol...it worked for the most but I thought it looked so "cheesy"...I am hoping to get all my pics in the next few months , then I won't have to worry...I do have the majority of my own.....I like the list of words idea too..then they are always surprised with what they get..lol...

thanks

I don't even think it's a question of dishonesty.. just not as professional. There was a girl that was working in the same area as me not too long ago and she had a really nice display of pictures. She had clearly taken a lot of time and effort to laminate pictures.. create a display... ect. Then I found out the weren't even her pictures. REALLY?! Why in the world would you spend money and time doing all of that laminating? It took her a long time to set up. She had a tablecloth.. books... ect. When she started painting it was clear she didn't have the tools or knowledge to recreate the designs she had displayed. I wanted so badly to say something about trying to use only HER pictures, but I remembered back to when I was new. Learning curve. I just thought her time would have been better served practicing... and her money better spent on nicer paints and brushes. Live and learn. I would definitely make it a priority to take pictures of any designs you want to display at a festival. You have to practice those designs anyway, right? Just make sure you get a picture!
Best of luck!

Last year I worked off a board of painted templates. This year, I sat down in front of my local libarary, and painted kids for free, if I could pick the design and take a picture. Filled my boards. It takes time.

Angela, I hope your back is doing better and hopefully you won't have to enter drug rehab anytime soon... but if you do, you could probably find a minion or two there...

I need me a minion, too, dagnabbit!
