My new chair...a good idea or not?

Post by Lady Jayde on Mon Sep 21, 2009 2:35 pm

I went looking for a tall stool that can be used for my FP this weekend. I'm 5'9 and sitting down has become such a pain for me that I now know I NEED to stand in order to paint comfortable.

I priced the director's chairs, but I just can't afford the hefty price tag at the moment. I came across 2 stools like this while in New York and I fell in love with them instantly. They were $15 each (but I got 2 for $25!) and they're sturdy as heck. I know they don't have the side arms but I think I can make them work. I'm even researching the feasibility of attaching a seat-belt type mechanism to it for the squirmy kids. I have some non-skid cushions to sit in the seat, so there won't be any sore bottoms to contend with. Is it secure enough having a back and stepdown? Or should I just keep saving my pennies?

I'd save my pennies. At 5'9" you'll need a taller chair. Standing slightly hunched over repeatedly for a few hours will have you spending mega-dollars at the chiropractor....and that chair looks heavy. I can imagine having to drag that thing from gig to gig, knowing that I was going to be killing my back using it.

I have been using that very chair for 3 years now. The seat is nice and wide. The height is good for me, yet easy enough for the kids to get on it. And yes, the price was right.

It looks perfect for sitting on a stool to paint, but maybe a bit low for standing. What is the height? Even my tall director's chair is sometimes too low for me, and I'm 5'5". Great price though! If you have them already, try them out and see what you think! Smile

I didn't measure the height, but when my 5 year old sits in it, it puts her face at upper chest height. I'm nowhere near what one would call a "delicate" flower so I was able to carry 2 of these chairs on one arm, 2 blocks (no closer parking) without breaking a sweat...I'm not worried about the weight and they really don't weigh much more than one of those metal short folding chairs. I guess I should've added that the table that it's next to is a craft table that's much taller than your standard dining room table or even a kitchen counter.

I figure that if I have to sit someone really tall, I'll just switch to my shorter stool, but it's so much better than leaning over AND bending over to get at a fidgety little face. How tall are you Froggy? (why do I feel rediculous typing that?)

I'm primarily concerned with the wooden lacquered seat and slippery bottoms sliding off of it.

You could always get some of that anti slip mat material to put on the seat of the chair. It's some kind of rubber, so it would clean up well. People use it for under their mats at home so they won't slip??? know what I mean? lol

I wouldn't think slipping out of it would be too big of a problem. You could ask the child to put their hands around the edge of the seat to hold on. If it's a very young child, I ask the parent to sit with the child in their lap. You may want a step stool so kids can climb in and out of the chair safely.

I did a gig a few weeks ago and the vendor next door to me had this exact chair and she let me test it out on a few kids and I love it!!! I just haven't made it around to the store yet to buy one. The kids didn't seem to slide around. It felt pretty light to me too. Oh and I'm 5'2" so it was a perfect height to me.

I haven't had any problems with kids sliding. I'm 5'3" (kinda tall for a frog). It might not be as light as an aluminum director's chair, but it doesn't seem heavy to me. I hope you enjoy it.

too low for standing, I would save up the money from the next couple of gigs and just get a directors chair.

I brought two director chairs the tall one made of wood and don't really like them. I prefer my stool and folding bar stool.
If I could find some wide leg stance captain chairs, I'd give them a try if the price is right.
In the meantime, my two are for sale.

I am 6ft tall and my tall aluminum directors chair was the best thing I could have done to save my back. I prefer to paint standing. It has got the step up bars on each side so kids can get up and down very easily and is light weight and very sturdy...can support up to 350lbs.
