Confession: I don't like to paint my face...

Post by Lady Jayde on Wed Sep 23, 2009 12:22 pm

Am I just an oddball or maybe I've answered the wrong calling?
This weekend I was allowed to paint every adult (but one) in my MIL's house before everyone went to the square for a beer. I was urged to paint my own face, but I just couldn't do it. Actually, I could, and I have before, but I didn't want to...so I didn't. I know that it probably looks better if the face painter AT LEAST paints something on herself/himself, but I hardly even wear makeup.

I'll send a cookie to anyone who can tell me what the heck is wrong with me! scratch
Does everyone else paint themeselves for a gig? When do you do it? At the set up or before you leave home?

Lady Jayde - you're not nuts! LOL

Sometimes I paint myself, sometimes I don't. I find it easier to attract business at an event and keep a small child's attention in the chair. Other than that - just personal preference!

I don't paint my face for gigs.
(mine are mostly all day festivals anyway)
I find painting on myself extremely hard in a mirror.
I'm really not sure why, because I apply mascara, eye shawdow and/or eye liner really fast.

I used to but I don't anymore - It is much harder for me to paint my face and it takes more time. I wear a very colorful shirt now with a big pink fabric flower and lots of funny saying on buttons that I place on my shirt - So when I come to the door they know that the entertainer has arrived.

I was recently at a jam where the challenge was to pick a card from the hat with what to paint and paint it on them selves. Only a few of us were comfortable painting ourselves. The majority were not self painters, but everyone did really well Smile

I actually hate painting my own face or having my face painted. I don't like the way it feels, don't like worrying about it getting messed up, and don't like the clean-up afterward. Ironic, I know! scratch

Post by JBax on Wed Sep 23, 2009 1:55 pm

I don't like having my face painted for an outside gig because I'm afraid I'm going to sweat or forget it's there and rub or scratch, but it's good for business. Last Saturday I did some animal spots mask and a nose and fangs because the University's mascot was a Jaguar, very basic. And I think I would have been in trouble if it were a sweaty day.

But I love painting my self... been drawing on myself since I was little clown . Only now my boobs get in the way of painting the left side of my face!

I always have something painted on my face for gigs - don't have to wear eyeshadow, then! I never do full faces, though - takes too long, don't want to sweat/rub it off etc. I'll do something quick with a split cake, teardrops and dots around my eyes, and that's pretty much it. (Oh, this is before I leave the house!)

Up until a few weeks ago when I had no models around anywhere, I'd never done full face on myself at all! It's definitely harder, and I'm sticking with eye designs for myself!

I like doing an eye design on myself, something bright and eye-catching, but not too difficult. It's a good way to advertise a design I want to practice, but haven't had time to get a picture of yet. I wouldn't want to do full-face either. It would be so easy to forget it's there and smudge it.

WOW! I taught myself, on myself. LOL But agree with all that here lately I've been doing quick eye designs rather than a full face on myself. Usually run out of time before I have a line. Guess the boards say it all... Wink

Confession: I don't paint myself. I don't like being painted. Probably been painted three times. Always at a jam (I was being a good sport).

I kind of HAVE to have something on my face... but mine is a different kind of makeup... it doesn't smudge or anything until I work to take it off... grease paint needs an oil based remover to get it off once it's set with powder. I would almost rather just wear a face painting thing sometimes, but the clown thing is working well for me so far, so I think I'll stick with it for now.

For gigs/private b-day parties I usually paint something just on my arm, maybe alittle something on my face. I have this shimmer puffer I got at Bath & Body Works. I love it and always puff shimmer all over my apron and arms and hair.

Now for our Halloween gig at the fairgrounds (at night) I go all out! I love doing the full face suagr skull on myself....it really attracts people to the booth. Very Happy

I don't really care to have my face painted either. But once it is done, I am ok with it. I will let someone paint me, and more than once for training classes and jams though.

Though, it is the best darn practice in the world. If you can paint yourself backwards in a mirror you can paint it on anyone!

I have only done one paid gig...and I did a glitter tattoo and a rainbow over the fairy tat. I let my son paint me the other night after I painted him and it was WEIRD!!! I had never really had my face painted before...

Okay, yesterday I painted myself for my sample book (and a new avatar), and does anyone else find this happening...? My skin for some reason isn't quite tight anymore! I actually had to hold on to my eyelid skin so it wouldn't move around!! What's wrong with me??? Did the skin monster come and stretch out my skin while I was sleeping?? I remember watching my mom put on her eyeliner in the mirror and having to hold her eyelid skin taught while applying it...never thought that day would come. I'm only 41. Sheesh!

I always have something on my face when working. It is very hard putting it on my face (which I do at home) and it does take a long time. The designs don't look as good on me as on others because the line work isn't as good. That monster has been at my house too and more than one night. But all the kids ask me who painted my face. I wonder if its because their faces look so much better than mine. I am getting better at it but still need so much more practice on myself. I don't mind the paint on my face and try not to touch it especially when sweating.

Ugh - I really, really, really, dislike having my own face painted.

Then again, I also hate letting other people do my makeup (letting my MUA do my makeup for my wedding was pure torture - looked great, but I was doing my kumbaya pose for most of the application), and I'm not fond of putting it on myself, either.

I just don't like the feel of things on my skin, the tugging at the skin, or the clean up.

Ick!

Welcome back Shannon. From your post on FPHQ, I take it you had a heck of a time at Living Canvas. I've actually missed your warped and slightly Twisted Evil sense of humor...

Re: Confession: I don't like to paint my face...

Post by Heather Timmons on Fri Sep 25, 2009 9:09 pm

I started off doing myself in the mirror to practise and actually enjoy doing it. One, I know 'when to stop breathing and hold really still' and two, 'I can take my time and experiment with new stuff with no one looking!'

Mark Reid was the first person to ever paint my face (and my bare back)....it was nice...very soothing!

Allison painted a butterfly on my face during our practise session...and it was fun, but we were under pressure to hurry up!

Kathy has painted my arms and that was fun to watch her work.

I like painting on myself, but I enjoy painting others when they are available and I am not rushed and the creative juices have a chance to start flowing and I can do unique stuff!
