Awesome! Thanks so much April! I'd just written them off as one of those "I'll master them later and settle for sucking for now" designs!

Man! I wish I were home to practice them...maybe I'll go buy a brush and some acrylics to practice with at lunch? Or does that sound desperate?

I just did a class with Mark Reid and he taught us a great flame. He also did a template on paper for us to take home and practice. I have laminated it and practice it quite often as I am in a city where the hockey team is the flames.

I just use a double loaded brush with yellow and red from a split cake and then make long "crab claw" and "u" shapes... then I outline in black and add white for a highlight in the curves and there ya go!

Re: flames for Lady Jade

Post by Metina on Sat Sep 26, 2009 7:35 am

She says "just". LOL

My flames are retardant! I learned these from the Wolfe brothers class. There's were hot, mine were not. Yes please scan that thing. I would love some practice!

Though, now that you say 'claw' It makes a bit more sense. I did though make a split cake for fire and it is really good. It has a thin sliver of black, red, metallic orange, yellow and neon yellow. That neon really makes it pop, but I just can't figure out the one-stroke technique for a flame. I even tried a dager brush. Any thoughts or videos??

I haven't quite got the one-stroke fire down... but I feel like I'm almost on to something. With the one-stroke, I always feel like it looks better if there's a base color down, so the next time I try flames with my flame cake, I'm going to put the "claw" shape down first, then do the edge in the one-stroke to get that cool gradient. I have to take some black out of it and add more red.

But, where did I see that wicked-cool demo of flames? Was it Lonewolf on another thread? Of course making it look too simple, but I tried the basic technique of it with the flames coming out of my dragons, and it made a big difference, but I'm not quite there yet.

Re: flames for Lady Jade

Bump!

I have been working on flames today and I have almost got it, though I have to think REAL hard as I am doing it. "C" then "U" and all in the right direction.

Any advice for not having to think so darn hard about it?

Yes, some people make it all look super easy! LOL I do wiggly 1,2,3,4 currently for flames. It actually looks pretty neat- Ill do a sample tonight. Its passed for fire so far. I got a splitcake for flames but havent practiced to much with it. Its intimidating. I must try to work on this. I bet I could do better flame work.

Wow, this thread is old! It was kind of like being in a time warp there for a second! Oh how we've grown since 2009! Laughing

I still have a lot to learn about flames, but I'm getting there...
