I did it! I re-potted my paints! (thanks to all who paved the way...)

Post by Doe on Thu Jun 07, 2012 11:58 am

I filled 2 of the 32 opening jewelry inserts - I also bought the trays for them to sit in.

I have one of the 18 opening cases for split and rainbow cakes - but, I'm a little scared... LOL!

Some of the paints were oh-so-crumbly - but, I put all the crumbles in and added water...

I think I'll love it - Very Happy

Some of the crumbly paint,
I crushed it into as fine of lumps as I could in my mortar and pestle.
I added a few drops of boiling water and crushed it together.
When the water and paint were ameliorated to the point that it became a thin paste, I scraped it into my new pan and let it dry open to the air.

Yes, you "waste" some of your paint. I feel that my FatMax would have been "wearing" a fine powder of yellow dust, had I NOT re-potted the crumbly yellow paint. In the end, it was worth it.

Where is the link to the jewelry TRAY that the 32 opening inserts fit into? I just have the inserts.

Here you go:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002HIH9BG/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M2T1_SC_3p_dp_2

They stack beautifully, nice and sturdy.

I probably should have done the crushing method - but, I did the "chop it up and pray" method instead. It's lumpy - but, I figure it will even out fairly quickly once I start using it. I have 2 parties this weekend, so I'll get plenty of time to test it out.

I have them in the top of my Plano rolling case, they fit beautifully stacked in it - I put my Starblends pallete on top. I know that Dawnie/Squiggles uses an empty tray and lays it over the top of the inserts - it doesn't latch, but looks like it works well. Suzy Sparkles has a latching tray - they have them on Amazon.

Oh, and I did a cheat sheet underneath the inserts so I know which paint it is, for when it's time to re-order.

Where did you get your trays? I ordered some from amazon but they were all flocked. I've found some un flocked but I'm wondering what other people are using.

Mine are the flocked ones - they seem to be fine. ;-) I've noticed that they wick out a bit of water - but, I can only see that being an issue if I'm using a TON of water like I did last night while I was repotting and shaping them. I'm sure I could have done a more efficient job - like cutting squares out of the middle of my cakes, but, I'm cheap...

At any rate, the flocking doesn't seem to be an issue at all. I think that Dawnie is using the flocked trays for her kit.

I swear I'm developing some sort of sensory processing disorder- those flocked trays feel SO ICKY!! to me. Maybe I will put them up the in the swap shop and get my hands on the plastic ones.

The good news is you'll never have to really touch them if you get the liner trays! 3 trays for $5. ;-)

I know what you mean about SPD... some things really oog me out. I'm sure my dad deals with it, he eats EVERYTHING with a fork - even french fries. He can't stand having food touch his fingers. ;-)

Pardon my ignorance....so you just refill as needed? they almost appear close enough to be "flexible" rainbow cakes. Know what I mean? How wide is each pot? This could be really cool if some thought was put into the placement if they are as small as they appear. What say you? Could you put a sponge along side a row of pots? Hmmm??? PIA I know! LOL lol!

Looks great! I have one plastic tray (with the 32 colors) and one flocked ( with the larger squares for split cakes). I prefer the unflocked but so far haven't had any problems. I don' t really ever touch the inserts now...they sit inside the trays so that's all i ever touch. The squares hold quite a bit...i've done several multi-day all-day events with them and haven't had to refill anything but my neon split cakes. The trays fit perfectly in thr top of my fatmax so haven't needed them to be hinged.

OMGosh! I think I have a bunch of these do-dads in my basement from when I attempted to sell Silpada jewelry years ago! (I don't WEAR jewelry, so why did I try to sell it again?!?)

Anyway, thank you for giving me a use for something I thought would never see the light of day again!
