Price...I didn't cave and got the gig!

Post by colormyworld on Sat Sep 26, 2009 10:58 pm

I answered an ad looking for a face painter for a community event...they looked at my work, said they liked it, and asked my rates. I said $75/hour (most in NYC charge $100 or more, but I'm new and not very good or fast yet so I feel bad charging even that much). The woman said she was interested and asked if I had an assistant as there would be a lot of children. I said I knew of a few painters in the area and gave her their names (ones that have more experience than me), and said she could contact any of them if she wanted more than one, and discuss their rates with them, but that since I just started the business I do not currently have "assistants" (I'm more assistant-level right now, can't teach yet lol!). She then said they had $100 budgeted for the face painting. I said, per hour? (since I'd told her $75/hour so was shocked she offered more) but she said it was for the 3-hour period (and they wanted 2 painters for that lump sum). I hesitantly mentioned that the rate I quoted was per hour, but still I almost accepted (and was actually going to offer a lower rate than I did and say $50/hour or something...I'm not tooooo picky, I need money!). Before I did though she said she'd discuss with her boss and get back to me. I totally did not expect a call back but instead she said to send an invoice, and that my rate would be fine and they would love to have me! Oh my god happy dance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I need to get my butt in gear, yikes! Happy happy ... and nervous!!!!!!!!!!

Good for you! I have found when I don't think I am worth the rate, neither do they. I have found when I don't bargin, I get more jobs and better rates. It just takes the click and you get it. Congrats!

Thanks! Haha Ashley, at least I've started growing some balls...even if they are just marbles right now lol! Almost didn't hold to it, but I'm glad I did. I just hope I can manage okay. There are gong to be a lot of kids (they estimated 200). ANd I am NOT fast, to say the least. I told them how long the faces take though so I didn't fool them into thinking I could do 200 kids!

Thanks again guys...seriously it's this forum that keeps me going with this. I hope everyone is helped as much as I am here!
