How to make TAG silver more silver?

Post by Coral3 on Fri Jun 22, 2012 9:19 pm

Anyone got any tips for how to make TAG silver more silver? Would adding white mica powder to it help at all?

Love that silver powder! Mix it with any flat color, and you have a metalic color! You can also put it on over silver dry with a smoothie, and it shines like silver leaf.

Yes, Whitney is correct about Mehron silver powder added to your TAG silver will make it more silvery.
Having said that.... Silly Farm sent me a free sample of FAB silver with an order last year. FAB is my new favorite silver.
If you are doing body painting, sponge a thin coat of Wolfe Monster Gray and then sponge on a coat of the FAB silver over top. The Wolfe Monster Gray seems to act as a primer and the silver goes on more opaque and shinier.
Happy Painting!

And how is it on its own, Lisa?
I've heard the Jest Paint silver was pretty opaque and like molten silver, but they don't sell it anymore (manufacturer changed it or something and they didn't like it so stopped selling it).
So I've been curious about the FAB silver but wonder how it is on its own?

FAB silver is the best silver I have ever used. It is not totally opaque. I had a job in April where I had to cover two models in silver. I did a prime coat of the Wolfe Monster Gray, and sponged on a coat of FAB silver. I was totally finished with my first model and moving onto my second, while the other make up artist was only half way through sponging on the silver.
(I did not like the art direction. It was as if the Art Director forgot that these were gorgeous women. When the shoot was over, I put eyeliner on one of the models, and I shaded in around her cheekbones and waist, for more definition. The model loved herself and left the shoot wearing the body paint.)

Thanks Lisa. I'll check it out. It sounds fab (haha...weak, I know).

You sound like you care a lot, which is always a gift to those around you.
Lucky model.

Dear 1HappyNut:
Face paint looks different on camera than in person. Face paint is a living art that can never look as astonishing through the lens as the impact of viewing it live. (My husband is a photographer).
Early on in my face painting adventures I noticed that some face paints appear blotchy and patchy on camera, while appearing perfectly serviceable in person.
The few times I have done metallic body painting, I made some mistakes... Gold, Bronze & Copper colors look astonishing on the skin when done as a full body application. Silver is not as flattering. (The sclera of the eyes and teeth appear yellowy). I have never been happy with any silver face paint until I was sent FAB. I loathe the smell of FAB. The smell has disappated over the last six months so it is tolerable to me now.
I have had jobs where it seems that the Art Director forgot that the models were gorgeous human beings. It seems perfectly acceptable to me to recreate monsterish themes, or go to absurd extremes. This was one of those times when the Art Director "just wanted silver on the whole body like a living statue". I was not the Lead Make Up artist, so I quietly voiced my opinion to the Lead, and then shut up and then proceeded to do what I was hired to do.
I like to lean toward creating beauty, or the other extreme of creepiness, rather than just staying in the safe middle. Please understand I have made many mistakes for creating work for the camera and now I am sensitive to the possibility that my work will appear unprofessional and amateurish.
The big part that this Art Director missed was the fact that we had these gorgeous, living, breathing women who we were painting and making them all the same in silver. The sameness of the silver took something away from their form (where a warm color like Gold, Copper or Bronze seems alive).
After the shoot was over, one of "my" models said that she was going out afterwards. She was waiting for the shower to be free to get the paint off, and I said that I could add to the paint she had to make it more "Night Club" make up. I added black eyeliner and black power around her eyes, a hint of coral powder blush on the top of her cheeks and dark gray in the hollows of her cheeks. I shaded around the sides of her waist (I wish I had had the BAM 1035, that would have been more beautiful and interesting). My fellow MAU set her paint with sealer and off she went. He also added mascara and a few individual false eyelashes. The photographer loved it. The Art Director ignored us.
The model loved it.
FAB silver is a good silver. You can add Mehron silver to it to make it more opaque. There is not one single "right" way to face paint, and the paint is always evolving, so change will always be inherent in our art. I love how our art evolves.
xoxo

Thanks for the tips everyone...I've gone with the mehron silver powder - haven't got it yet, but it's on order. (That and some mehron gold powder).

I ummed & ahhed over the mixing liquid - wasn't sure if I should have bought it or not, I was thinking of just sprinking the powder onto my gold/silver TAG cakes so I'm hoping that works out. Otherwise I'll have to get mixing liquid later on...

Ooh, my Mehron powders arrived this morning - loving them already! (Except I think I dumped way too much powder on the cakes in my excitement...so I added water to try and de-powder it...now I have a sloppy goopy mess (eek!) which needs to dry out!!)

@ Coral3 ooooh wow how exciting getting your delivery. Oh bugger putting too much on in all your excitement... if you find it is just tooooooo goopy you could always scoop it off & put it in a small lidded container & maybe use it as a silver dippy pot. Of course it depends how gooopy it is.
It would be lovely to meet up some time & talk paint... Very Happy
