The best freebie ever meets kismet- a story of love.

Post by Lynnie on Mon Jun 25, 2012 1:40 pm

I've been involved in the Freecycle/Reuseit communities for years now. In that time I have given and received many awesome things but last week was the absolute win of all time.

A few weeks ago I was telling Hub that I'm already getting burned out this season. I hired two new artists this year because we are so busy, but sadly one of my "seasoned" artists is simply different...her art is weaker, her attitude is crap, she's just not living up to our standards of quality so I think I will have to fire her- which I don't want to do because she's also a friend. We are "AB Family" not coworkers here.
Between that and being so busy that I could barely breathe, I've been stressed and tap dancing on my own last nerve for months (which is why I've not been on here).

Add husband, 17 year old son and a household to keep up (normal life). Then we have a friend renting a room from us that...well...she's a very high strung city person who doesn't know how loud and high strung she is, living in a low key, laid back, small town home. It's not a good match.
*pluckpluck* Goes the nerve.

On the local ReUseIt group a 4 person hot tub was put up. She claimed it worked and was offering it for free, with a new top and chemicals. No other details. No age. No size. Nothing. And in my infinite wisdom, I didn't think about it, I didn't ask questions, I didn't discuss this with my hub (which I ALWAYS do)- I just put in my request for consideration.

Then she told me she chose me to receive it! Well, I didn't expect that at all and had to tell Hub that we were getting a hot tub. He raised an eyebrow and didn't say anything (couldn't, he just bought a brand spankin' new motorcycle!).
We have this funky shaped deck and on one side is a nailed shut gate that opened to stairs that lead to the side yard, where I had a raised garden. On Friday, starting at 5:30am, I ripped out the raised garden, handed my son a sledgehammer and told him to have fun with the stairs. Then I crossed my fingers that the tub would fit in the spot.

We rented a truck, gathered up 2 of Son's strong and awesome friends and one of my own, and we went to fetch a hot tub. It wasn't nearly as heavy as we thought as we had to squeeze it through a gate to get it on the truck, while rolling it on it's side. I hoped that nothing broke! It barely squeezed into the rental truck (that we rented at last minute and took the LAST truck they had, by chance). When we got home a neighbor, who wasn't supposed to be home but was, helped unload it and had the best idea for easy unloading- and it slid perfectly into the spot I cleared.

Did you know many hot tubs have to be plumbed to the house and have special ground fault outlets? I didn't.
Interestingly, luckily, this one fills from a garden hose and doesn't need to be plumbed (whew!) and two owners of our house ago had a plugged in pool, so we already had a ground fault outlet. It was perfect!

Did you know hot tubs require more care than pools? I still had stuff left over from our pool, which helped. When I filled it and then tested the water, the ph and chlorine was PERFECT- immediately. No fine tuning needed.

We plugged it in and everything works. Every jet. Everything. We were warned it might have a small leak. Nope.
Brand new cover.
And while the actual hot tub is about 12 years old, the external wood case has been maintained so that it looks new. My neighbors even commented on it.

And ladies, after a long day of painting and/or anything really, this is AMAZING (which I discovered after Sat and Sun nights). In fact, I actually relaxed on Saturday night, resting in front of the jets, looking at the stars. I didn't even hear my hub speaking to me- which allowed him to scare the hell out of me. lol
Hot water and a wine slushie is a match made in the ninth cloud of heaven.

It was kismet, I tell you. Kismet. Everything worked out absolutely perfectly. This tub was meant to be mine.
And I am SO IN LOVE with it!!! lol

(and I think that I'm going to name it. I haven't picked a name yet but my car is Cherry and my fridge is Holden. Suggestions? ;-) )

We used to have one in our old, old place and really want another one. It's a pain to keep up but we really miss it. We'll have to make sure we watch for those hidden costs.

Enjoy!

Yep, Ronnie is on it! My hubby and I have been thinking about one, but we have to have the electric run, and get a permit, and a whole bunch of other nonsense first. Windows, siding, replace deck with patio (easier to maintain) THEN hot tub. Or should we just do the hot tub and let the rest rot around us? It is sooooo tempting...

We have one sunken into our deck on the back of the house.
The nicest part? It gets pitch black at night here in the boonies.
Need I say more? Wink

Haha! Our next door neighbor is a retired Lutheran minister and his wife is VERY nosey. Somehow, I think they would find a way to spy on us.

Meh, I figure that if they see something they shouldn't, they deserve the scarring of their retinas.
I'm a rather large woman...

Lol!!! at all the comments!

I'm so happy for you, Lynnie. I second the suggestion of naming it HEAVEN!

I too have a sunken hot tub on my deck in my lovely rural, quiet neighborhood with nearly 100% privacy and evening pitch darkness with a 180 degree view of the valley with its lights and all the stars in heaven. It is bliss. Both neighbors on either side each have their own hot tubs, so that leaves ours to enjoy with just my husband and I (*wink*).
Sitting in that hot water at the end of the day with a bevvy in hand is a nice way to unwind.
We have a functioning but broken lid and the temperature is always a fluctuating a bit, so we play guess the temperature and I almost always guess the exact number. haha, a strage thrill but a thrill nonetheless. It's like my other fun skill of spatial recognition/judging what will fit into where - a weird but fun thrill to be right. I admit to being a bit nutty...it's in my name after all Laughing

So happy for you to have found a perfect way to bring balance back to your frayed nerves.

LOL Diane!! I'm pale too so that will be fun! Very Happy

We have neighbors but the perfect place in the yard also came as being sized perfectly for a privacy fence that we already have and need to install! We've been enjoying it with beverages in the dark watching the stars and fireflies. Soooo lovely.

I will say though, hub is not a water person so I had to *ahem* convince him of the virtues of having a private hot tub.
He likes it now! Wink

Thanks for sharing all!
