Books vs. DVDs

Post by Dynamike on Tue Sep 29, 2009 1:27 pm

I was wondering what has more advantages to painting a full face, books or DVDs? I do have two DVDs, but no books. What do you think it is best to learn full face painting from?

I own neither, so I can't answer your question exactly, except to say there is a lot of great resources on YouTube!

I prefer DVDs to books for learning technique and I prefer books to DVDs for when I am practicing painting something new.

Books... books.... BOOKS!!! I like handling, and reading, and turning pages, and running my hand over the glossy paper, and sitting down watching old Perry Mason episodes with a pile of books to flip through for ideas/inspiration... while second guessing Perry...

I don't own a VCR or DVD player. I would have to watch DVDs on my computer which I LOATHE doing.

If I just want a quick look or remember I saw something that I need to refer to I just grab the book, flip through, look and put it back... no need to load up and watch something.

We were told by movers that we had more books that anyone else they had ever moved... gee whiz, that's quite an accomplishment don't you think?? I have culled since then - donated a truckload of horse books to a local youth rodeo, another truckload of cookbookd and reference books to the local public library booksale, etc.

When it comes to "magic" those who want to learn the easy way prefer DVDs. Those who want to learn deeper use books because it requires more concentration. I do not know if it applies to face painting.

So far I have only bought books, but just purchased Rebecca's DVD this morning. I love watching the youtube videos and hope this will be the same.

I guess it would depend on your learning style: hearing, watching, reading, doing, or some combination of the above. Sitting in a class/workshop would be my optimal way of learning, but as I can't do that yet I have to settle. I've read descriptions in books and love sample pictures, but there's something about watching someone's technique as they are doing it that gives more than a description alone could do for me. But, everyone is different.
