Everything comes to a end

Post by Dynamike on Tue Sep 29, 2009 5:21 pm

Has anyone had a challenge in ending their duties? For example your time is up, but there is still more wanting to have their face painted. The only time it is a challenge to me is when I have another location to entertain.

This past Saturday, after sunset (it was so dark) and I still had kids asking to get painted. A few kids had parents standing there as well. I had to say it was time for me to go. The dark was a great reason, "I can't see in the dark". I have said in the past, "I have to go now. I have to pick up my kids". I have also put a closed sign up (it is on a four foot stick) after a few kids to cut off the line. That one is my favourite so far. A few may try to sneak in but I simple tell them "Sorry, I am closed" and turn back to whoever I am painting.

I post sign with the times I am painting and state that "the last face will be painted at X" and I do not go past that. I learned the hard way that other methods of cutting off the line do not work for me.

And I stick to it. And I don't accept bribes to do "just one more". I do all corporate so am only paid for the time I as booked for unless overtime is pre-approved.

Ditto Shannon.

I have a firm time posted, and I stick to that. Doing "just one more" is ALWAYS bad news. Always.

There will always be disappointed children - you're job isn't to make every child happy - you're job is to paint the best you can during the time you're scheduled to be there. The sooner you learn this, the happier your painting sessions will be.

Amanda H,

The biggest problem with handing out signs is that the last person in line, the person you hand the sign to, has to be as strong-willed as you. They aren't really invested in you leaving on time, so often they just hand the sign off to the first parent to wheedle them about it, adding more people to your line.

I also just thought of another method that didn't work out: painting on hands. I used to check the time, do a quick calculation of how many I could paint in that time, and then put a dot on each of the children in line. What did I learn? That fricken fracken sneaky moms would REWET the paint, then press their child's hand against another child's hand to add more children to the line. Grrrrr....

The only things that have worked for me are numbered stickers (that I remove and place in a binder after I paint each child - these work as my photo permission sheets as well), and the line ending sign with the set finish time on it.

For large festivals, I will mark hands and close the line down in enough time to finish when I need to. Often if the line isn't too long, I'll bring the crowd inside my tent and close it off with a rope and sign.

For parties, if the host does not to extend my time there and I haven't painted everyone, I very apologetically tell everyone that I have another event to go to. This works like MAGIC! I instantly hear it being repeated through the crowds. "She can't stay, she has another event to go to!" It's almost like they are happy to send me off to my next party. As far as the "event", sometimes it IS another party, and sometimes it is just my dinner. After all, getting home is always eventful. Cool

To be honest I try & hand out queue closed sign to either a relatively self possessed teenager or a rather large dad.

I find that stating that they will get the best face of the day for dealing with the hassle helps.

I also put a sign on the table or a prominent position stating that the queue is definitely closed. If possible I get somebody to close the queue.

With parties I tend to make sure that every body has had something before I let somebody have one more face painting/tattoos etc. Normally the kids accept this as fair & are ok if I then have to go.

When I receive a large area, I will paint cheeks only to make sure I get more done. At an average party I will do the full face.
