My husband is driving me CRAZY!!!! Caution: VENTING

Post by photomomma6 on Tue Jul 03, 2012 5:37 pm

So, my husband, bless his heart, is in his Senior year at the Art Institute in Indy, so I asked him to make a website for me for my facepainting. Subsequently, it's taken him 3 weeks to get ONE page put together, and on that we argued over everything, because he is the know all of webdesign. (that's his major). I want to honor him and respect his opinions, but I have a strong opinion considering it's MY website for MY business (am I sounding self righteous?)
So, the cover page is amazing, and looks spectacular, thanks to my design and photoshopping skills (oh, did I say that I came up with it??? He claims he did) But after a little colaborating, it's really a beautiful site. So now, we're working on the navigation of the buttons and what should be on each page. I had a fabulous idea, but after showing him, he shot it down, and said "You'll ruin me" with his portfolio. (is it illegal to choke your husband??) He said HE was the designer, and if he has clients, he will not give them what THEY want, but what HE knows looks the best. wow. I manage a portrait studio, and if I only let people buy what I thought the best photos were, we'd be out of business!!!
so I said: "okay, you're the designer, DO IT and show me what you think is best." (stronger than that, but I'm just so ticked right now, I don't have time to make it all caps....Smile

So, ladies, please pray for me to have patience and respect my husband so I don't KILL him. I love him, but I'm on the verge.... Rolling Eyes

Dear photomomma6:
I am married to a photographer. www.timleyes.com
I went to school for illustration.
I worked as a computer typesetter and computer illustrator in an advertising agency. I studied a Master Class in Portraiture.
when we get together to do a job, we have giant 'communication' issues.
When we work on a job together, we play "pingpong" with the job. He does his work and proudly shows me what he has done. I work on the job, then I proudly show what I have done. We do not allow each other to "critique" the job until we are ready to send the proofs to the client.
We work together better when we are not actually working together.
Does that make sense?
xoxo

My DH is a professional web designer. I've learned I have to talk his language. I NEVER work on the site face to face. I put what I want in an email and send it to him. That way it gets copied and pasted into his to do list. I also find I have to be nauseatingly specific. And having it in an email lets me think through what I want with out having to choke him.
I also don't know if the rest of my comments about, ahem, bartering *wink wink* are appropriate.

My hubby is my website builder too - it was so nice toread your post as I posted the same thing a while back. We can't agree and it would seem anything I actually want is making it all too hard. We always end up with a compromise in the end but it takes some pretty stressfull debating to get there.
It would probably explain why my website constantly needs updating and that we only have done in once in three years.
I actually completely understand why the website designers want upwards of $700 to build you a site..... It is hard work!
Gotta say though your hubby doesn't sound like he will Beverly successful in his bis with that attitude. - he should be great full he gets a test run on you!

That's awesome sweethaven!!! Love it. and yes, Debra, I know I'm a blessed woman, but in 11 years, he's been a great guy and blessed me with lots of wonderful things he's created. It's just been a sorespot since this is the new thing he will be doing for the rest of his life....it's a little touchy. at least he listens to my opinion, he may not DO it, but he listens...

Tash, I'd like to see your website, but I can't pull it up. It says there's an error. And yes, he needs to learn some customer service skills!

Holy crap! You're right!
Dammit! This sort of technicle crap confounds and baffles me!
Great time for my laptop to die a violent death.... I'm stuck on my bloody iPad .... Friggin useless... I can't even share photos on the forum with this stupid thing. Don't ever buy an iPad to run your bis. What a joke!
Thanks so much for letting me know! Guess I should check on it more often.
Grrrrrrrrr guess I'm off to computer tech land to give myself a headache!

Phew - the site still works - I typed www.faceartbytash.com into the search engine and it came up - so it must be something to do with the link in my signature.... Maybe after the forum overhaul?
Who knows...

your signature takes you to /default.htm page, which doesn't exist any more. So just edit that in your sig.

I know exactly how you feel! My husband is a web application designer. That means he is great at writing the behind the scenes stuff, but from a perspective of what will draw people in with artwork and color and layout, well, that's more my department. He wrote my first website. I was pretty happy with it, but he never wrote an administration user interface so I could update the page on my own. The SAME PHOTOS flashed by in my photo carousel for a YEAR! Can you say business suicide?

So finally while he was away at a conference, I got tired of waiting and rewrote my web page MY way using the tools provided at webs.com. A couple of my friends have used it for their businesses and I am pretty pleased with it. I love that I can add/remove photos and calendar updates whenever it is convenient for me. I felt like the kids from the proverbial cobbler's kids have no shoes story!

I love my husband so much and am so proud of him and how accomplished he is in his work, but sometimes, I just gotta do what's best for my business. ;-)

As for your hubby, photomomma6, if he gives the clients what he wants not what they want, he won't have/keep many clients! He's going to have to learn to check his artist's pride at the door. Could you imagine us? "I want a purple kitty" and we say, "oh, but this princess mask will look much better in my photo gallery. Let me paint you as a princess even though you want a purple kitty!" Yep, that's the way to get repeat clients and bookings! Lol.

My boyfriend is currently in his 2nd year of taking Graphic Design, and his professors would slap your husband upside the head for saying something like that!

One of the major challenges of graphic design is working with your client. They have their own idea of what they want, and if the designer is completely inflexible and says something like "I'm going to do what I think is best".... guess what, they're gonna lose that client! As a designer, you have to compromise to keep your client happy. Do the best you can do WITH that client's idea. Sure, you can suggest different ideas that you consider 'better', but if the client knows what they want, all you can do is make the best of it.

I work as a video game artist, and sometimes I don't agree with my boss's design ideas, but I make the best of them. That's what being a good designer is all about!

Yeah, I've been in customer service my entire life, and I sat down and talked to him about it yesterday. He agreed, his approach was a little off, and that he needs to learn to deal with people better--he's been a factory worker and a student our entire marriage. SO--here is the website front page. I'm really happy with the way it turned out.:

I can't see the right side on the preview, so I don't know if you can see it either?

A very elegant look! Much different from mine but then again I need to match my name! I'm also a graphic artist so I'm working on a new site for me and let me tell you - I am my own worst client! It's taking me about as long but I am happy with it so far. I'll have to post it when it's online. Right now it's living in Illustrator waiting to be turned into code clown

I hope your husband does change his attitude about working with clients. I worked for 5 years at a small print shop and that would NEVER have flown! We would have lost so much business... Sometimes the ability to work with different opinions and make something spectacular speaks volumes. And they often know their business and clientele better so they may very well be right (unless they want Comic Sans or Papyrus. Then it's just flat out wrong. Laughing ) There's nothing wrong with advising them with a professional opinion especially when they don't know what they want but ...

Although I suppose it's easier to be stubborn with your S.O. - me and mine do stuff like that all the time. It's hard doing business for family!
