Stencil help

Post by mariamonroe on Mon Jul 09, 2012 1:33 pm

In regard to the glitter tattoos.... is it true that you shouldn't re-use stencils??
They will be pretty expensive to replace for every gig and I'm thinking there may be
a way to re-use them. Even if I have to clean them with a special solution, I'd rather do that than keep buying these things over and over (big bucks).

Any suggestions on their re-use?

Hi Maria!

If you're using the stick-on vinyl stencils (like the ones from FakeToos, Amerikan Body Art, etc.) it is generally best to use them only once.

The sticky-part will not stay sticky for long, and would pick up dead skin cells each time you use it... so it would be kind of icky to re-use! I also think you would have a tough time keeping the design looking crisp, as some of the little thin parts can stretch when you remove the stencil.

I get my stencils from FakeToos, and they are 45 cents each. I charge $5 per tattoo, so the cost of the stencil is quite low.

You could also experiment with freehand tattoos, which involve using a henna cone - therefore, no stencils! You can find some threads about freehand glitter tattoos in the "Glitter Tattoos" forum.

It's wierd no one makes a stencil for tattoos that is re-usable.
Free hand is fine for me, but a couple of my helpers aren't very artsy and need the stencil for speed and design appeal.... guess I'll have to suck it up.

I'll check out the tattoo forum too. Thanks for the info!

A cheap solution is cut your own stencils by hand in contact paper, that is really really cheap option and the contact paper holds good for tattoo stencils.

That is a great idea.... I saw where some of the others are using a Cricut machine with adhesive backed vinyl. It's perfect timing for me with this as my birthday is in a couple of days and my husband's getting me this machine. So looking forward to trying it on regular contact paper first.
Thanks for the tip!

hope is not too late DON'T buy a Cricut, get a Silhouette, you won't be able to use the cricut to cut the stencils.

Hi Maria
Please read the cricket and glitter tattoos heading before getting the cricket. The cutting programs don't work with the cricket anymore. Search cricket.
