Kryolan selfmade splitcakes

Post by Ospreyfalcon on Tue Jul 10, 2012 8:58 am

Today I was brave, and cut two of my Kryolan aquacolour palette pots in half, and put one half into the the other colour's pan. I used old red and a fleshy pink. However, I don't think they're very good brush-used splitcakes. While they're fabulous for blending, you don't get this rich watery consistency on a brush as they're far too creamy. I tried some roses, but you don't get the consistency needed.

I tried sponging too which did work very nicely, but they're fantastic colours for blending anyhow. And here was me thinking I could bring more life into my palette.

Unfortunately, I didn't take a picture before washing my arms and feet off.
I tried it again so I do have pictures! Left is brush, right is sponge application:

So, in short: Kryolan homemade splitcakes: great for big areas and sponge work, not so great for delicate brushwork (roses etc.)

I find that Kryolan in general isn't very good for linework, and only use it with a sponge....

I tried making kryolan neon rainbow cakes---and found, like you, great with a sponge, but I can't work them up with a brush...

They are fine for small details like center of flowers or leaves, but not linework. Fantastic for bases Smile
