Ladybugs

Post by PaintedFaces on Tue Sep 04, 2012 7:21 am

This is just embarrassing. I mean, it's a circle with some dots on, right? Well, that's my problem. My ladybugs always look pretty much like they did when I was in kindergarten! I hate hate hate them. Does anyone have a nice, simple, cartoony way of making a ladybug look good? Or 3d even? I severely embarrassed myself at my last birthday party, a beautiful one stroke floral mask and then the dreaded red blob and dots. thank goodness the big sister wanted a unicorn and I got a chance to redeem myself. Very Happy

OMG, I feel for you! It's the worst when they want a full face lady bug in rainbow... like... ugh..

I would suggest using a dauber on a red/black split (very little black!), that should give the 3D effect and perfect circle. Then the rest is basically black dots, one for the head, maybe 5 on the body... then a black line down the middle to separate the wings?

I'll see if I can do one up today for you Smile

Here's one from my inspiration file, Thx to the original artist (whoever they may be).

I do mine a bit different, with the lady bug "sitting"on the eye brow. The leaves distract from the actual ladybug and give it a full face feel IMO.

Is that not the sweetest thing... My concern would be what it looks like when she opens her eye... and would it crease... I absolutely love the colour for the leaves though!

This is mine, I like them... and I would NOT do them ON their eyes, most red paints are not approved for use on the eyes.

(sorry, I'd embed it properly but Photobucket is being stupid today)

Thank you, you guys! They're all great! Right. Time to practice enough ladybugs that the next time I'm asked for one, I don't revert to my kindy-special under pressure!

I love the dauber one particularly because daubers just make everything easy. Very Happy

Full face rainbow ladybug Jessica? Really?!? O.O I can't even...

I do one just like Ashley Picken's (in the 1st photo). I double load a sponge w/ orange & red & put the orange part on the eye (sometimes red/pink, etc).
The shaded colors didn't translate to the photo.

The worst part is she wanted her mouth to be the ladybug's mouth... I'll see if I can find a picture, I felt awful because I knew she didn't know what it would look like. She hated it.

Ok, I found it and burst into laughter. I was so put off by the request that apparently I forgot to put antenna or pupils on it.

I don't have a picture but did a full face lady bug for a twelve year old girl
( thought it was a weird design choice for her age) it was ugly What a Face

Re: Ladybugs

I see what you mean. I can't really see how it could even BE a good face. I'm going to *make* kids get the small ones, when I can't talk them into something else entirely!

I had a similar moment a long time ago when a small boy asked for a bumble bee. I said do you mean on your cheek? and he said "no, my whole face". It was awful. I hadn't even thought about how to do one so it was a pale circle with yellow and black stripes around the outside (like a lion's mane) and then a dot nose and a couple of antennae. Easily the worst face I ever did.

To make matters worse, I found out from his father later that he'd actually wanted the TRANSFORMER robot Bumblebee. Oh god. The shame. Sad

I have no problem steering kids in a different direction if needed, lol! I hate that sad little look they get when they see a design that didn't turn out the way they thought! Psalm, thx for crediting the artist!

Re: Ladybugs

I had to do my flower princess crown three times yesterday (with ladybug) and thanks to you lovely people I was happy with my ladybugs! I may even enjoy doing them from now on. I used a teeny dauber (small faces) with brown and red and then black for the wee legs antennae etc.

LOL, I just went to check my photos from the job and I took them all from the wrong side! No ladybugs visible. I'm such a wally, honestly. Suspect

My full face ladybug is still based on this book, that I bought when I first started painting (lightyears ago it seems)

It's a small picture on the right hand side in the bottom of this image, you'll have to enlarge it to see it clearly...
