Do you have to use face painting stencils, or will any work?

Post by Facepainting by Tina on Fri Sep 14, 2012 11:15 am

I am a newbie for sure! Was just wondering if the face painting stencils differ from other stencils on the market? If so, what is the difference. I just came across a lot of neat stencils, realatively cheap too, on oriental trading one is called a "flourish template" that looks awesome...has swirls and even a crown design and fleur de lis and that sort of thing. So for all you pros, what's the difference?

I have both types and I have to say, I think any will work... more or less. THey need to be malleable enough to curve to the face and small enough to hold comfortably in your non dominant hand in order to use them. Size is important. The BAMS (Bad-A$$ Mini Stencils) stencils are curved and small which makes them very nice.

Thanks so much, I have found tons of thin plastic ones on oriental trading...bugs, western, leaves, etc. that would be great for quick cheek art (which I hate and take forever at)

Thanks a lot!

Hi, I am fairly new to face painting and I was just curious are there any books that can be recommended for inspiration?

I would google Rantzau's Face Paint Forum BAM stencil contest. Breathtaking.

Hi. If you have good internet connectivity, I would actually suggest you subscribe to FABATV.com, you can have varying subscriptions at varying costs.
If you are completely new to face painting you wont regret it, it will be money well spent.
It really depends where you want to go with you face art, but out of the few books that I have bought, I would have to say that the Extreme Faces book with the dvd is the most practical.

I also bought some of the Pink Power stencils from Silly Farm - LOVE the star one and use it all the time. I came across some by Plaid at Walmart the other day and they are basically the same material - flexible plastic. I think they are meant for decorative painting but they work great! I got a pack for about 3 bucks. There are 4 patterns on each page and I think there were 4 pages. One was even animal print stuff - leopard spots, zebra stripes... All you have to do is cut them apart and punch a hole and you've got a ...non-bam but nearly the same stencil. Much cheaper too. I think the designs in them might not be as intricate and a little thicker than the BAMS but I find that works well as the small parts tend to want to pull up while sponging I have found. You'd think using stencils would be EASY but I think it takes MORE practice than free hand brush work!!! Razz

Bee Happy, I have that same set by Plaid. Cut the apart and I trimmed as much excess as I could, along with rounding out the edges. I use the hearts the most from that.

Bought the pink power ones from Silly Farm years ago because I hate doing cheek art, and thought it would be a good alternative. They are thicker and not as flexible as the BAMs. Still, I use the stars and fairy a lot out of that set.

Have three BAMS which I love so much, that I ordered the new pack from the forum shop. Can't wait until they get here. I mostly use them for snakes, butterflies and mask designs right now.

I keep the all organized in a small coupon organizer. Each compartment is labeled so I can find them easily......sports, animals, fantasy, etc.

The first is made with a selfmade figureskating stencil. Made from that plastic things where you can put papers in... (very cheap!)

The flamingo's are made with stencils that my mum made for painting on canvas, the material was less flexible, so better.

Have you tried the teeth one Doe? I thought about ordering it because I tend to have trouble with teeth but I'm not sure how well it would work since lips are a bit trickier to paint.... Hmmmm scratch

I just found these, they seem great! And pretty affordable...most sheets have multiple stencils on each one. http://stores.ebay.com/AIRSICK-STENCILS?_trksid=p2047675.l2563 They say they are for airbrush but they should still work, right? I don't want to order them if I am wrong... Shocked

Have to try them, but it does look nice and usable. You can buy it everywhere in the world, not just in the Netherlands.
