Latest Starblend Designs

Post by Denise Cold on Sat Sep 15, 2012 1:49 am

Some of you might have seen these on Facebook but it's been awhile since I posted Starblend designs here. The latest cool development (which I've had a V8 moment over) is mixing the colors before applying. It made weak colors stronger (like the lime green I got from that yucky green) and made a purple that is actually pretty. I'll put the swatches last:

Monster Gray with two different grays made from black and white mixed:

Four different purples made with blue and red:

Swatches that inspired the Grinch. The original green is on the right:

You guys are too nice. Maybe I could get Mehron to sponsor a Starblend contest for my Youtube channel. We could have a "Make an 8 minute design a 3 minute design with Starblends..." or something like that.

I was so excited about the color mixing...and it really doesn't make that big of a mess on the cake like paint does. It's easy to fluff it off. I was dreading buying a purple Starblend because I'd read about problems with it but this way I can have different colors without having a ton of cakes.

Wow!

Love them all!

I did see the Grinch on your facebook and thought it was awesome Smile I did a Grinch on my son last yr for Dr. Seuss week at school and I used a light green for the base. It turned yellow by the time he was walking out the door Shocked Mad If I had used Starblends, then I would have known what color it would be since I wouldn't have to wait till it dried Rolling Eyes I'll have to give it a go with Starblends this year! Very Happy

Thanks so much for this post! I also don't want to buy a bunch of starblends - read that some of the colors are harder to work with. And I want to keep my kit reasonable Wink But I like that I have the option to use the powder if the person wants an all day face or for a boy. I got the monster grey and find myself wishing I had just gotten the black (along with my red and white). What colors do you have and use most? Did you mix the green with red? I have a set of lumieres, too so I was thinking I could skip most of those colors in starblends and just have red, white and grey for now. I'll use black paint for linework.

I haven't tried making brown yet...the brown is a really pretty brown though. I'll try mixing some more colors in the next couple of days and posting them.

Monster grey was a lot darker than I thought it would be but it is great for wolves and I used it for a base for the rotten zombie so if you do a lot of zombies that would be a great color to have. If you mixed it with white it would make a great light grey for elephants and kitties and maybe shark stuff?

I might even get brave and try making blends in a mixer and repacking them. Yikes!

Yes, great Grinch!

Ooh making your own - that's ambitious! LOL. So you mix them right on top of the cake? I was also thinking one could kinda mix them right on the skin as you are working too for some nice blends.

I do wish I would have had the grey a few months back when my nephew was here and ALL he wanted to be and would let me paint him as was a zombie... not my forte. But I should really get better at it. The starblends will definitely give a more realistic effect - the paint I used kept looking more like a mask.

Yes, I'm taking a smoothie and rubbing it in one color and then in the other and then back if I'm not getting the shade I want. Mixing on the face it tends to go in layers, more like paint...but that is good because then you can get different effects.

Like I did the grinch base in the lime green and then I was able to use the dark green (original color) to deepen the eye sockets and the shadows and yellow to create highlights. I used dark green on my chin line and at the temples to shape the face a little more. Then very light black to define the shadows right at the highlight point.

Like I've said before, the Wolfe Brother's Extreme Face Painting step-by-step book is the best because they teach you about highlights and shadow on the face...and I especially love their FABAtv classes because they explain it while they are doing it. They work so well with Starblends.

I love Starblends here in the hot and humid South! I use them a lot for around the eyes, where paint would pose the risk of running into the eyes...especially on boys who don't seem to like wet paint on their eyelids, generally speaking. I love the black for skeleton eye/noses, pirate patches, panda eyes, etc...I use the white for my Hello Kitty masks and bunnies, puppies, kitties, skeletons. For vampire and zombie eyes, I mix black, red and purple on the cake. Red and white for Spiderman, brown and tan for monkeys, white for tiger eyes and any animal muzzle (kids are always eating!)...you get the idea. LOVE the Starblends!

Amazing, as always. Your blending and face-shaping is absolutely faultless. I don't own a single Starblend, and you make me want to invest...

As it is, I'm becoming somewhat of a tackle tart at the tender facepainting age of 3 weeks. I should stop wanting New Painty Stuffs. Laughing

Kammy, that's why my first gig was a busy fair. I had to pay for all my stuff! I made it through, not too bad of painting and had about $800 at the end of it to pay for my tent and all the paints I'd bought and I was on my way...

I didn't have any Starblends until I was a year into though. If you are going to get some just start with white and black for eyes and you can use paint around those. Smile

What Denise said. Don't overspend yourself - build up some income/savings first. I've learned the hard way (buying supplies BEFORE a party or event only to have it fall through Mad ) You don't want to be way in the hole. Also you want to practice with the paint first - get good ( not that you aren't) and fast. Different prodoucts have different techniques and it could slow you down more of you are not yet familiar with them (another hard lesson Embarassed ) Get the necessary stuff first so that you can do some gigs and then you can invest in more.

Wow - that was your first gig? Talk about jumping in at the deep end - much kudos for that. Sounds like you did fantastically though, which is hardly surprising.

My first gig will make me no money other than a necessarily tiny donation towards paint use. It's a 2-hour charity event on Saturday. Very relaxed, and for a cause so worthy that, honestly, I'd have done it even without the aforementioned paint donation. I'm looking forward to it, but it certainly won't pay for my new addiction. Laughing

Noooo, you're supposed to say "Nooooo Kammy. Bad Kammy. Don't buy anything else, Kammy!" Wink Seriously though, they're the two colours I was considering, perhaps with a grey for shading purposes. The one time I've most wanted a Starblend was when I did that sugar skull effort yesterday - it would've been so much nicer to have a powder base than the paint, and I get the feeling the linework would've gone on smoother as I wouldn't have been scared of reactivating the base colour so much.

Talking of which....have any of you ever used Stargazer white pressed powder? In my long-ago goth days, I swore by it for paling out my already pale skin. What are the differences between Starblends and something like the Stargazer? Mainly the opacity?

Re: Latest Starblend Designs

Post by Denise Cold on Mon Oct 01, 2012 3:08 pm

You don't need gray, just mix a little white in with your black on a smoothie like I did in the Starblend Repair and Blending video.

I had been practicing for about 4 months before I did the fair and I did have a basic kit already but I had to buy a bunch of stuff to get ready for it. It was still nothing compared to what I have now. Embarassed I think Lisa Joy Young is smart to advise people to stay basic, especially starting out because there are some gigs (like a little girl birthday) where I literally only use about 4 cakes and some glitter.

I think doing the volunteer work is great, especially when you are starting out but it's just hard to break out of that reputation later with that group of people but I think it's a great way to hone your craft. You'll find out what designs you like, what your painting style is and whether you like to stand or sit, etc. It will be great. You'll have to tell us how it goes.

I've been painting weekly at a local restaurant for 6 months with only the following: Wolfe appetizer, Wolfe black and white; Snaz white, red, and orange; Tulip silver; also have a pressed powder palette I use constantly. I added a couple of Tag split cakes in July. My most recent purchase was a white Starblend and replacements for my black and rainbow cake. Point being you can do quite a lot with just a little!

What about brushes you ask? Very Happy Let's not even go there! Lol!

Denise, you should have smacked me upside the head then when I ordered MY first Starblends... white, red, and GREY! I wished I had the black. Now I need to wait awhile (but I may break down and just get it cause my Kryolan black is NOT making me happy with Batman...)

Please do let us know how it goes, Kammy! I'm doing a charity event on Sunday as well - getting paid but it's at a lower rate. I'm looking forward to it!
