Empty Hardshell Color Wheel $35.00 with lid from Snazaroo US

Post by Rosenberg-Cox on Tue Oct 13, 2009 10:04 am

This is a horrible product. It is much heavier and super think than described on the website and the lid is really just a piece of plastic that slides around on top.

Directly from the website: "This is a hard shell version of the Color Wheel. Each unit is machined out of hard white plastic. Each comes with a clear lid. Put the 2ml refills directly into this indestructable tray or slide your current thermaformed tray over the top of it like a glove".

This is the response I recieved from Snazaroo: "Debbie,The hard shell wheel is intended to be a support for the color wheel, not to put the paints directly in the hard shell. Once you put the color wheel on top of the hard wheel, the lid will stay on.I just looked at the website and I see where the instructions are incorrect. We recently got our website updated and there are corrections to be made.I am so sorry for this misunderstanding. Please give my instructions a try. If you are still dissatisfied. You can return it and we will give you credit."

I am still fighting to get my money back, not a credit.

Positives
1. none

Negatives
1. way to heavy
2. lid does not fit
3. does not fit individual paints as described on website
4. too think to fit comfortably in the hand (hurts to hold it for to long)

Scale of 1-10:

1. I would never recommend it to my worst enemy

No really... what do you really think?

I've got the insert wheel (won it, didn't buy it) ... the 2 ml cakes are just too small to be workable for me. It gets used on gigs with multiple painters so that the basic colours can move around the table easily, but that's about it.

Can you post a picture of it? Just curious what it looks like. I hope you can resolve it with Snaz. So far, I have found the customer service really great. But even if you can only get a credit, they do have lots of nice things that you might want. Please let me know if I can make some suggestions based on your needs.

the wheel that goes over it was the one I started with for all my painting... I liked the wheel fine, but I don't know if it really needs anything behind it... the plastic is pretty rigid already as long as you aren't really rough with it. I lost the lid almost right away though... it fits over but doesn't attach at all so it just slips off unless you put an elastic or something over it. The 2 ml cakes fit better if you take off the plastic on the back of them.

Here it is. It measures about an inch high and eight inches across.

Doesn't seem like much for $35. Is that the cost with the paint?

Could make a lot of split cakes though! You could always try the swap shop. What does the underside look like. Just curious abou the way you hold it. Sorry for the trouble.

my colour wheel fits into the walk around palette so I imagine that is how you would be expected to carry it.... otherwise you'd just leave it on the table. Far as I can tell, the purpose of it is to strengthen the relatively thin plastic of the colour wheel so that it doesn't crack if you push on it too hard.

Actually, it's machined.....individually, so that's why the cost is what it is. The material is very expensive too. So 35 bucks is cheap for the work and material involved. That's all the positives that I have, after that, The only thing I can say is what a unnecessary Idea.

The bottom is solid. It does not fit in the walkaround tray. What Perry Noia said was correct, 'it is to strengthen the relatively thin plastic of the colour wheel so that it doesn't crack if you push on it too hard'.

The holes are for the 2ml size that come in the color wheel or starter kits but what you can not tell from the picture is those little holes were an inch deep. The 2ml refills are only about 1/4 of an inch.

I don't even own the color wheel it is refering to. The website was very misleading in it description and use.

I have this one....have had it for years. The color wheel fits into it perfectly (it was created simply as a stronger base for the color wheel), and the whole thing is intended to sit in the round area of the walk-around pallet....it fits perfectly in the round area.
The wells are deep and intended for you to put several 2ml refills into each opening thus giving you a lot of make-up in a small area.
The whole thing was really designed for people who need a kit they can walk around with and paint. I find it works fine for doing brush only work, but I don't like using 2ml holes for sponge work......but it does work in a pinch.
I bought the setup just in case i ever need a walking face painting kit.
I agree about the cost....it is kinda high for an empty container, but as Jenny said they are expensive to make.
I am very sorry you didn't get what you though you were getting. What you probably would have liked better would have been to buy the empty color wheel.....it is much cheaper, is lightweight, and the lid fits on it.

If they fix the description on the website, no one else will go through what I am going through. Thanks for you input but, I must disagree on one point (only one). The shell they sent me did not fit in the walk around tray, it was bigger. I went to a friend who has that walk around set. We could not fit it in. It had a lip around the base that was just a bit bigger that the spot/hole for the color wheel. Don't know why, it just was. (I was going to give it to her if Snazaroo would allow me to return it).

I was looking for something to put my smaller paints, the specialty one (metalics, glitters, etc) and stuff in. One set/place kind of thing rather than having them individually around. Since the site said it could be used without anything else, I thought it would work. Unfortunitly it only works with the color wheel. Something I do not own nor intend to buy.

Either way, it was not what was described on the website. I have already sent it back & I am determined to get my money back, no credit.

I am also out the $10 shipping. It only cost me $4 and change to priority mail it back with a delivery confirmation. What a racket.

DID she get her walk-around pallet from Snaz?
Weird....mine fits perfectly. The walk-around tray they sell is the kind you can get at Wal-Mart that is made for dolding your paper plate, eating utensils, and drink at BBQ's and such.
It could be that the manufacturer changed the design of the tray and Snaz didn't realize it and modify the color wheel to suit the new size. Dunno why they would be different in size otherwise.
Does the tray look like this one?

Looks just like that but red. It is pretty and she likes using it. The hard shell just would not fit down in the hole/spot. I watched her try. I did not ask her where she bought it.

Update:
I called my friend. She said she bought her walkabout tray through Silly Farm at least a year ago or longer. Don't know if this makes a difference or not.

Sorry for this irritation! I can see how that would be frustrating. I assumed the hard palette would be used on it's own, too. I hope you can get your money back for it considering the obvious misunderstanding.

You CAN use the hard shell on its own.....the lid is just not designed to fit it snugly on its own because it is the same lid that is used for the color wheel insert. I would not use it on its own without the insert for an altogether different reason. The material that the hard shell is made from is not "slick"....it seems rougher and more porous to me. So I like having the insert because it is easier to clean, and the shell offers it stability.

But regardless of that fact, I think the problem is that she was looking for this product to be used for something in particular, and when she got it, it wasn't really what she was expecting and was not functional in the way she had planned to use it. I really hope she is able to get her money back, or enough products in return to make it worth the trouble cased by the misunderstanding.

There is nothing to assume. The website says it can be used with the color wheel or on its own. Snazaroo misrepresented the item on their website. I would not have bought it if the website had said, 'to be used with the color wheel only'.

This is a huge mistake on their part. What makes it worse is the website still has not been changed.

I guess Snazaroo does not think misrepresenting items is a big deal.
