Anyone paint for a Diwali festival?

Post by Caswell Designs FP on Mon Oct 08, 2012 2:21 pm

I was asked if I would be interested in painting at our local Diwali festival, which is an Indian Festival of Light.
Normally, they only have henna artists, but they had so many requests for an entertainment for children, they thought face painting would be good to offer as well.
The festival takes place in the evening, culminating in the lighting of candles which are placed into the park fountains.

So, I am wondering if anyone has done festivals for the Indian community and how they went?
I need to get back with the organizer with my decision asap.

I have been slowing down on festivals, because they are such a crap shoot and I explained as much, but they feel since the henna artists have paid their booth fee, it would not be fair to reduce mine.

I haven't ever painted at one, but I would. Sounds like it would be worth a shot, especially if they are looking to entertain the children. Make sure you have a light source, since it's primarily at night.

I haven't done a diwali festival, but I did a Bollywood birthday party where all the little girls got faux-henna with bling. It was fun!

Very, very pretty faux henna designs, Kara.

Thanks!

Hmm... my original post had a bit about how I would totally do a Diwali festival, somehow I've managed to delete that! Smile

I think it could work since I'd imagine the upper tier bling masks would be really really popular at something like that.

I decided to take a chance and paint at the festival.
Photos from previous years festivals show children dressed in beautiful traditional garb, jeweled headpieces, lots of bindi.

Now I am envisioning faux henna designs, peacocks, lotus blossoms, Om symbol.
Perhaps I need to just take a peak at Kim Brennan's website, she does really beautiful work I can draw inspiration from.
