How many glitter colors do you let folks choose when at a large event?

Post by Y-Von on Mon Oct 08, 2012 10:47 pm

Hi, all.
How many glitter colors do you let people choose, once they've selected their stencil? I can only imagine how long it might take to wait for people to choose their colors. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Y-Von

My husband does the tatts , and he says he asks them to first choose 2 colors, then he shows them the choices and they pick the 2 they want. We have a few shades of most colors so that seems to help if they at least pick 2 ahead of time while he preps.

I show them the bottles (which I keep in a rectangular container) just after I've alcohol-prepped them and their skin is drying. I let them point out their colors and they almost always pick very quickly. I don't limit the number of colors they can choose, but rarely does a tattoo need more than about three colors (some make sense to go up to five or six, and it's no extra real work time-wise).

I don't do glitter tats (yet) but I do gems and I have them all on a piece of cardstock (about 4"x 6") and I hand it to them and say, pick one...then I paint while they're making up their mind...I have never had anyone say "I just don't know" by the time I was ready for the decision. You could hand them a card with small circles of each glitter on the card (no clients fumbling around with your bottles of glitter or touching ANYTHING...hate when they grab stuff lol), while you're prepping the skin applying the stencil, glue, etc. Gives them more than ample time!

I was mentioning this on another thread but Leah Reddell suggests (and I agree) that you let them choose their favorite and then YOU choose two complimentary colors.

That's a good idea Denise. I will have to pass that tip on to my son.
Sometimes kids get carried away with the color selection, and you have to reel them back in.

I've found that with face painting too...Sometimes they don't naturally have an eye for color and the result is really ugly. I had a girl choose blue and green for a tiger....it was horrible. Never made that mistake since. Smile

I sort of do that too Denise (great suggestion!) I say, what color? The kid says "Pink" and I say, how about pink and purple or pink and blue? kid picks one, and off I paint!

I guide them too, if I see that it's going in the wrong direction. But lots of times, they come up with some pretty cool combinations!

Denise you couldn't have spoken more truth if you said the sky was blue! Whenever I ask a child what his/her favorite color is it never fails that their eyes start to stray towards my kit. Now I just wave at them to get their attention and ask them again...sometimes I explain that the colors in my kit are MY favorite colors but I want to know THEIR favorite color. When I get a kid in my chair who asks for a weird color combination that I know won't work I explain to why to them...Something about telling a little girl that that blue and orange butterfly will make a brown butterfly convinces her that she should leave the color choices up to me...sometimes it's the parent that chimes in for her to "let the artist use the colors she knows will work best.".

For older kids who come up with weird combination that won't work I just tell them to pick one because all of those colors aren't going to play well together and then I take it from there.

As for glitter tattoos, I was telling the customer to pick 2 colors, but I like the idea of picking one and letting me choose the colors that best compliment their choice.

I actually learned a similar thing in parenting books and used it all my mothering days...never give your young child an open ended choice because you might not like what they say. You limit the choices and give them a choice within those limits like "would you like macaroni and cheese or a ham sandwich for lunch."

You are so right about the wandering eye thing too...that's why I usually pull 3 rainbows and put them right under their nose. Smile

i found what works best for me is to ask their two favorite colors. works the best and fastest especially if there is a line.
