CONCERN ABOUT MICA POWDER

Post by jerm on Sat Oct 13, 2012 2:16 pm

Hello, this is the first time I am posting in the forum. I am starting my mica/glitter tattoo business. I had ordered mica powders and glitters from Coastalscents.com from suggestions from other members of this forum. Yesterday, I had received my order of mica powders and glitters, I was very much excited. As I was checking the micas my husband jokingly cried out from reading the label on the mica container saying that "titanium dioxide is toxic". I thought nothing of it but at the same time was curious so I checked the ingredient in the mica container and the ingredients on it was titanium dioxide , mica, ferric ferrocyanide, tin oxide in one of the colored mica. So, I googled titanium dioxide and there were some interesting articles about "titanium dioxide". I had put the links to a few of the articles that I found interesting. What are your thoughts about this matter?

I am a cake decorator and "titanium dioxide" is what is used for powdered white food coloring.....the food coloring I have is fda approved as safe for consumption, and is 100% titanium dioxide (only ingredient on the label) so I would assume it's safe to put on the skin?

Titanium dioxide is also the pigment that makes your wolfe white, so very white and why it was hard to get it a year ago.

Here's the food-safe pigment listing about TiDO2 from the FDA:

This is the cosmetic FDA listing:

Also, things can be toxic based on level of consumption, for example, nutmeg is psychoactive (hallucinogenic) and toxic (convulsions, tachycardia( when large amounts are consumed, but it's safe that the levels we eat it.

Moral of the story is don't snort lines of mica powder (or nutmeg) no matter how awesome the inside of your lungs would look like all shimmery. Let your outside be shimmery and glittery, instead.

OK GildedCat, with that comment, I am sure you can relate to a mother's dismay when one teenage son bet another younger one he wouldn't snort wasabi powder...I think his trachea, lungs and nostrils must look like sushi...

My thoughts are I'm tired of people who join this board for the sole purpose of telling us the products we use are unsafe. I think they all must have graduated from the Jenny McCarthy School of Pseudoscience and Social Activism.

I was wondering the same - this seems to happen now and then on the forum, doesn't it?

My brother once snorted powdered sherbet for a bet. I'm fairly sure, given the reaction he had, that it's not meant to be used that way, even if it's perfectly safe "as intended". He was sneezing fizzy stuff for days.

Kammy x

P.S. I wonder if eating or snorting mica would make us all more like unicorns, though...

It would make you sneeze like a unicorn, I bet. And, since mica is a mineral, it would probably pass through your digestive tract unscathed.

I think I might invent breath mints especially for face painters, made with mica and glitter, so we can sparkle everywhere. And when we pass wind, it will be like have tiny poofer bottles in our pants! That's magic for you!

Oooookay, it's clearly time for bed.

I completely missed this thread when it originally posted.

I shudder to think of the little glitter storms I have inadvertently caused with my poofer pants.

When I do glitter lipstick, I tell the kids not to lick their lips unless they want unicorn poop. It's usually good for a laugh.
