Re: Tipping Protocol?

I have a wedding website I run and one of the articles I wrote and posted there is on tipping. It's focus is obviously re: wedding vendors, but the premise is the same. Tipping is a practice which originally was intended To Insure Prompt Service (TIPS). Some go by the rule if it is a business owner providing the service, a tip is not necessary. Most of us are business owners so that could be why it's not that common.

Thanks for all the tip jar ideas. Great ideas for those of us just starting out.

Hey Magna, I read your article about tipping for weddings. As a make-up artist who goes TO the client, I would LOVE to be tipped if they were extra happy with the job - and I have been a couple of times. I've never heard of the "business owner" rule...

Personally, I actually charge LESS for weddings that regular gigs as I usually end up doing the whole wedding party including the moms once I arrive - so I end up doing quite well from the booking.

You say that you should only tip if you go to the salon...?

That's just the generally accepted protocol as my research has turned up. If you go to them, then you're probably the business owner and all the profit goes to you. Tipping rewards the extra service given by the person doing the work. In a salon they're usually getting a basic wage or the salon takes a cut at least. It doesn't mean business owners don't deserve a tip too. It's refers more to business owners that have a 'staff'.

But like this thread shows, there is so much confusion about the subject it really is whatever people feel like doing. I agree with the other posts here...don't expect it, but if it's offered...take it : )

Hope that helps.

M.

I have been tipped at almost every birthday party I have done. I believe it is due to a small clause I have in my contract stating that all monetary transactions should be kept out of view of the guests (so as not to spoil the magic).

It lets them know that tipping is fine, but doesn't put any pressure to include one.

I started this whole face painting business from working at a salon doing nails/makeup/facials. I have 95% of the time received tips for services at the salon about 10-15%. Yes it is customary of people to not tip the owner, but I see this trend going away, most of the salons I've worked in, the owner gets the most tips, usually because they have to most happy loyal customers.
When doing face painting and I agree to a lower per hour cost for a business, I tell them that it is only done if I can put out a tip jar to compensate for the lower price point and I am allowed to market myself while there. No Probs with that yet.
I do not solicit tips when being paid per hour, party, corporate, etc. But if someone hands me one, I say thank you and put it away.

BEST TIP EVER

One day I was doing updos and makeup for a wedding at the salon and found out she was having a Moulin Rouge themed wedding complete with Burlesque Dancers and fire-eaters (I live near Orlando, performers are a dime a dozen) I jokingly told her she should have me face paint at the reception and she was all for it and wrote me a check right there for $75 for the first hour, pending how long they would need me she would give me more if I needed to stay.

I stayed 2 hours, made $150 from her total, when I was leaving her dad, who was a bearded whole face tiger at that point, came over and gave $100 bill, hugged me and said many thanks!

TIP JARS TIPS: Believe me I have experience in this!

Start the Jar with what you think an appropriate tip is 1, 2 or 5 in there, not folded sticking partially out. I have even taped one there to fold over the edge (depending on the container) Don't put coins in, unless you expect to get coins.

Empty it regularly, Try to only keep the starter money or a few more bills in there, but clean it out and put it away, no one is going to want to throw you more money when it looks like you could make your car payment with your jar! Clear out any coins, too!

Also, there has been plenty of times I have heard about people's tip jar being taken, another reason to clean it out!

Ok so Sunday I packed my paint bag and folding chairs and went to an out door Christmas fair last minute soley with the intention of making some kids smile and hand out cards. I put my very first tip cup out. I had a solid two hour line. Parents would walk by with their and say there's a long line are you sure you want to wait and the parents that have been waiting for over a 1/2 hour would tell them it's definitely worth the wait she's great ( that was the best tip!)

Any way I left with a full tip Jar and the store I was in front of asked me back and gave me a sizable check because of all the business I brought into the store.

I started the cup with a 5 dollar bill and painted whatever the kids asked for I went with out a book. I got great practice and future business. I could have easily slept in and missed the oppurtunity.

Just wanted to share. (my first reindeer ever is the one on the right I had no reference material with me)

Ha! That's cute! I could just see my kids yanking bills out of my wallet to fill up your jar.
