Horses and a busy month, not such a bright idea

Post by PaintedFaces on Wed Nov 21, 2012 1:34 am

I took my kids to pony club today. They had a spare horse that needed riding because one of the girls didn't show. They swore it was a nice calm horse that would be fine with my "haven't ridden in YEARS" self.

Well, probably, as long as a dog doesn't leap out of the long grass and snap at it's legs. The horse shied RIGHT out from under me. An instant of falling and a world of pain. >.<

Nothing appears to be broken but my right arm is wrenched (yes, i'm right handed) and my back is black and blue and incredibly sore. Also with the dizziness and nausea although I'm positive I didn't hit my head (had a helmet on anyway).

So, ummm, whoops. Sad I have 2 days until my next job. Cross fingers for me!

Ouch Kara! Hope you feel better soon...though the way you are describing injuries it sounds like it may take a couple weeks to get over it!

Wow you are lucky. Falling off a horse ca be nasty and with hidden damages. Have you gone to get checked out?

We have horses and while they are some of the most fantastic and amazing creatures they can be quite dangerous too.

My mom fell off her horse a few years ago, she had been reaching into her pocket for her phone so she could call my dad and tell him that yes my daughter could come ride when the hose rack fell off the side of the barn with a loud clatter and bang. The horse spooked and mom was just off balance enough that she went down. She thought she was ok but a few days later she found out she had ended up breaking her neck and back with a piece of bone pressing against her spinal cord and spent 12 weeks in a cast/brace with the family having to do everything for her including rolling her over. When I found out what happened I tried to bring my daughter home but they wouldn't let me. Apparently my then 6 year old daughter had decided she was my mom's home nurse and my mom still says she doesn't think she would have been able to do it without her.

I will keep you in my thoughts and wish you a speedy recovery

The dizziness and nausea can be consistent with a concussion. You can still get a concussion even while wearing a helmet. I would go to the hospital to get yourself checked out by a doctor for a possible concussion. The concussion can occur from the head snapping back and then rebounding from an impact. The helmet may protect you from the impact, not the whiplike range of motion from the hit.
As a former trainer for my daughter's rep hockey team, I trained the girls how to take a hit on the ice. I did NOT train them how to give a hit... that is not how to play the game. I was trained to diagnose a possible concussion. In all those years of being a trainer, there was only ONE concussion on our team.... and that was ME! The girls were warming up on the ice before a hockey game and a girl took a warmup shot that flew into the bench area. It hit me in the head, evidentally. I did not black out, my youngest daughter told me. I do not remember. I don't remember being hit. I could not read for over a week. The letters kept jumping when I was trying to look at them. I could not watch TV in a darkened room. It gave me headaches. I was trained in how to recognize a concussion in other people. I did not recognize a concussion in myself until a week later.
I would see a doctor, Kara. Take it easy.

Oh man, I didn't think it could possibly be anything that bad. Now I feel all paranoid. Sad

Nausea has faded, but my eyes are a bit blurry and I'm still dizzy. But we're 45 min drive from an A&E and it's 10pm. I don't think I should drive, especially not with the kids!!!

What would they do anyway? Isn't it just rest?

Call the A&E and ask them what their protocol is, given your symptoms. You should NOT drive. Do not mess around with this, if they want you to come in. Do you have two friends you can call in an emergency? One to watch the kids and another to drive you? Where in NZ do you live?

You may be perfectly fine. I would not take the risk. Just call the A&E and ask them.

Yes, please be carefull!
We also got a wake-up instruction, after our son fell on his head. We had to wake him up during the night every two hours to see if his reactions were good.

I called. They asked me about 200 questions and concluded that unless things suddenly get worse, I can wait until the morning, but I definitely should go then. I think if anything was badly wrong the questions themselves would have confused me... maybe that IS the test! Very Happy

My pupils are the same size and there's no one sided blindness, paralysis, numbness or loss of motion that can't be explained by "holy crap that hurts!" So hurrah. The dizziness is annoying me now though.

I live in a wee nonexistent place in the middle of nowhere called Ahuroa. The volunteer fire brigade (also volunteer paramedics) are just down the road, so if things do get bad, there is help, but I can't call them out because I'm dizzy and sore. For one thing, the air raid sirens would embarrass me. Very Happy

Thank you though! I'm glad I called them, it's reassuring, if nothing else.

Okay! I am glad you called them, too.
If you DO need to call the ambulance, never, ever be embarrassed. You CAN request that they arrive without sirens to avoid alerting your neighbors.
Rest.
Get better.

Hey guys. Still alive. Yay!

Going to the docs at lunchtime (tis morning here now) because it took me three attempts to find the coffee cups in my own house this morning and then I said to my son "hey are you going to have breakfast before school" and he said "mum, I sat right there next to you and you even helped me pour the milk"

So, while it could possibly be blamed on my absentminded self, I do believe I may be concussed. Razz Aside from that, I'm all bruised and achey, but no real damage. As long as no one gives me complicated design requests that aren't on my board, I should be fine to paint on Saturday. Smile

Hi. I'm sorry. I got back from the docs and fell asleep. I had x-rays and things. Nothing is broken. I am concussed but it's not serious. I have to take it easy and put up with the dizziness and mild confusion for a few days.

It's very annoying, but hopefully won't last long. I'm not supposed to drive until the dizziness goes away.

Thank you all for your concern. You're all wonderful people.

So good to hear it is only concussion - put your feed up and let them pamper you. You can ask for hot chocolate many times, not your fault you cannot remember asking before!
