I took the plunge yesterday and dyed all my sponges. For those of you who remember, I have a gazillion of them... seriously, about 300 cut in half sponges.

I dyed all of those suckers, plus my Martha pouncers...

Just a couple bucks Very Happy might want to get a couple if you have lots of sponges. You can only use each batch once...

Also, Ruggabug told me last night that she used the liquid RIT Dye, and it did not do the job as well as the pictures on this thread show. I used the powder from Michael's and it did a fabulous job. It only does one batch of about 30 sponges at a time.

Do these sponges make my butt look smaller?
Yes.
I think so.

Re: Dyeing Sponges Black

Post by Denise Cold on Wed Dec 05, 2012 12:27 pm

Yeah, sorry that I didn't give more detail. I did one pot full there wasn't much dye left when I took them out. The 30-40 per box of dye is about right. That's what fit in my big spaghetti pot anyway. Paola, they'll be extra black!

And BTW yes, the sponges to make you look thinner. Smile My old sponges just made me feel dumpy and no one would ask me out. Now with my new and improved sponges, I get invited to all the best parties.

I wonder if new sponges verses old sponges make a difference in dyeing them? Like a PFD prepped for dyeing. Maybe there is a slight coating on the sponges. Then eventually washes or wears off and can take the dyes better.

Re: Dyeing Sponges Black

I just dyed mine cheers I had old and brand new and they all dyed the same. I used the same batch of dye for all of them, about 50-60 sponges. I did do two batches, but all with the same dye. The second batch was the tiniest bit lighter, but if I had nothing to compare it to, I wouldn't even notice. It was super straight forward and I am VERY HAPPY with them!!! I even did my daubers with wood handles and they were fine. Thank goodness for magic erasers though, I had lots of drips on my counter tops Sad.

Good to know Tia!

I've got granite tops so they should be fine. Going to go look for Rit dye tomorrow.

I was tempted to go through my old dyes, but I bet they aren't intended for synthetics. I do remember Rit not doing good for natural or organic fabrics.

I was wandering on the dauber with the wood handle. What happened to them?
Did they not loose the glue that holds the sponges to the handle?

Denise, i rinse my sponges and i am letting them dry. Did you add anything else to fix the color a part the washing liquid and the vinegar for the color not to run? they suggest to use something to fix it and i was just wondering as i did not find it in the store. scratch

Re: Dyeing Sponges Black

Post by Lady Jayde on Thu Dec 06, 2012 10:49 am

Denise said a couple pages ago to wash them again in the washer and to add vinegar to the bleach dispenser to help with colorfasting. That's what I did and all worked well. I too dyed about 40 in the first batch and they turned out midnight black (and beautiful). Then I dyed another 40 or so and they came out kind of charcoal colored. I tried another 40 or so but no dice so I added more dye to the bath (and more water and more vinegar) and that last batch dyed a lovely midnight black like the first. I put the second (charcoal) batch in after that and there was enough dye left to darken those to a midnight as well.

2 boxes yeilded me a lovely table full of black sponges. I just have to come up with a new name for them now...I can't use the greenie weenie moniker anymore and everything I come up sounds...uh... inappropriate.

@ PaolaSunglow

The handles of my plain wood daubers turned black, which actually looks great! I had one dauber not make it... but it was an old one that was really loose to start. It came off when I washed them in the washing machine, so if you skip that step with daubers- it might be better. I had one dauber that I had painted with Nail polish (Thanks Shannon, for that tip) and it stayed purty purple Smile I also dyed my cheapy smoothies from wolfe halloween kits and only one didn't stay stuck to the plastic.

I just dyed mine, found this post and went to Walmart right after work!!! Now, do they go straight to the washer after or do I let them air dry first? Question Thank you soooo much for the idea, Denise! I am like obsessive compulsive lol and the stains were driving me bonkers!

I set them with white vinegar, rinsed them and then put them right in the wash with some more vinegar in the bleach dispenser.
