possiable silly Question?

Post by Abbadabbadoo on Wed Dec 26, 2012 3:00 am

This maybe a silly question, but if you can't draw, can you still face paint?

I think you can.
There are many different techniques in facepainting and some of them don't need drawing skills IMHO.
You can make beautiful things without it with one strokes and splitcakes of course, but for some other things being able to draw a bit, is helpful.

No drawing, just technique:

I am not that good at drawing but facepainting seems to go well for me so far.

Just give it a try, all beginnings are tough, but as with everything, practise makes perfect!

Yes! You do not have to be able to do portraits in order to face paint well. It is the design elements that you use that are more important....
Teardrops, swirls, line work, curls, dots, flicks, star bursts, etc.

Happy painting!

I would say so. I'd like to say I'm a jack of all trades and drawing is one of them, however when I started FPing it was a total difference than drawing. As one of our forum members said above me, it's really all about technique Smile

I can't draw. That's not false modesty, it's just the blinding truth - I am a TERRIBLE artist in general.

I don't do too badly with face painting so far, though. :-)

It isn't necessary to be able to draw to be able to face paint well.

BUT... if you can draw you can take it to a whole different level.

I agree, I can't draw very well but face painting is not the same. I think the big advantage to being able to draw though, might be in creating your own designs..I can't seem to come up with anything original off the cuff..could just be me though...lol..

I should point out here that Shannon is a known superhero who can do everything. Very Happy Every time I look at her avatar, I sigh and feel like giving up.....then I'm inspired and keep trying. But I still can't draw!

I can draw and I can paint, but I have trained tons of people how to paint and they couldn't draw or paint at first! If you are willing to learn you can paint.

and it's funny, I can never think of original things by myself but when I am actually painting at a event, I become this creative butterfly! I amaze myself.

Also,
I CAN draw.
I CAN paint.
I will go back to doing classical oil portraits once all the kids are in university.

I can train anyone to paint.
I cannot train PERSONALITY.

Face painting is an experience for the child in my chair.
It is not about how well I can paint...
It is about making that child happy.
Sometimes, it all about painting on a nose and four whiskers.
Other times, it is about an underwater sea scene with a Manatee being decorated by a mermaid alá "Wyland"esque lighting from above. Or painting the Starship "Enterprise" on a boys' chest with no photo reference.

I have worked with a face painter MUA named Teena Black, who creates SUCH an atmosphere of love and magic around each child, that they don't want to get out of her chair. Teena makes ME want to get in her chair to weave her loving attentiveness upon my face.

This is called an Art.
The Art of Face Painting.

I call it Magic.

Thank you Lisa.
I love you
i need it to hear that, sometimes i get stuck into too much perfection and Technique mode and forget the original reason why i love face painting ...."the happy face of a child". This is actually one of my main fear for not jumping out there full force as i would love to, and you just reminded me what to look for when in panic attach.

Lisa, that is so true...personality is so key. You should enjoy children and want to be there making them smile and giving them a magical memory...not just for the money.
