Re: Dear TAG Black and White

Post by MelindaT0813 on Wed Jan 02, 2013 9:08 am

In the span of 2 weeks I FINALLY managed to use up a 90g of TAG black and white, and let me say.... GOOD RIDDANCE!

I noticed the difference Immediately!!

I started using the black mid-gig. I had it out because I knew that the Wolfe black wasn't going to be enough and I mindlessly began to use it. It didn't even register that a new brand of paint was coming so I wasn't being biased or anything, but the first thing I thought was "oh gosh, what is wrong with my black, did I not mix it enough?".
It was no longer as opaque and was dragging the color under it.
So after several attempts to make the paint thicker and work better I realized that I had switched brands... It was... TAG. I used up the 90g and I can say that I am happy it is gone.

As for the white, that is a different story entirely.
The white is a horribad.
Might as well be using snaz.
I used it up and the ENTIRE time I was thinking to myself how I hated it.
It picked up every color, it sucked for opaqueness and it wore off quicker than Wolfe.
WAY worse than black.
You see, with the black, I would occasionally forget how much I disliked it. For the white, I was constantly reminded of my cheapness.

In the end, lesson learned.

Also, I made splits with TAG white in it and managed to use it up.

I have to say that I wasn't complaining about the TAG white while it was in the split. If was good enough that it didn't bother me and I had forgotten that TAG white was in it.

Before yesterday's gig I made new splits (same colors) but used Wolfe instead of TAG. At the gig I remember thinking to myself, wow, the white in this rainbow cake is great! It was so opaque and bright.

I now realize, it was Wolfe instead of TAG but at the gig, I wasn't concentrating on brands, or going to the split already dreading it (like I had been with the TAG linework white).

Wolfe white is just the bomb apparently.

Couldn't have said it better myself, I have only been painting for a VERY short while now (about 5 different occasions), and started with Snaz white and then bought TAG white....all my designs on my boards were done with one of these 2 brands but I got frustrated and before my first festival gig I bought wolfe white and black. Every single time I did a design with a lot of white or black outlines people always remarked "Wow, that looks even BETTER than the photo, and I thought that looked great!" So in the end it worked to my benefit that my photos were done with aweful black/whites lol I will NEVER buy another black/white for anything except maybe a muted base or a split that I want to be soft.

I have no idea what went wrong with these colors but I noticed it right away with the white also....somewhere on here is a whole thread where I painted lines with both, etc. The white tends to crack and roll off of the skin. You're right, I don't notice it in splits where it's thin but it was bad for line work. Sorry I didn't save you the effort. I sorry to hear that black is bad too...I like the pearl black for use with kids or to mix with my Wolfe to get a softer black. I'll write to Gaynor again and see if they've made attempts to figure out what's wrong. (Not that I have any say...just letting them know. Smile )

I love the idea of painting your board with not so great stuff so people think you are even better in "real life"-
ha ha ha--I guess people might LOOK at the board and think---NO THANKS, but I guess I would rather people like my work MORE then what I posted then have people say "That doesn't look like the picture!"
Smile I just bought a wolfe black and tag white---I think

The only problem I've had with Tag black is it goes a bit gloopy sometimes, but I just switch to a new jar when that happens. I do use the white but am not happy with it. I tried DFX white but saw no difference. I could be wrong but I think Wolfe white was a fair bit more expensive in Australia and I can't afford it with the amount I go through. I seemed to have seen a lot of opinions about these different brands, some say they are exactly the same and just have different labels

I recently ordered Wolfe 90g pots in black and white and I swear it is the best! I was using Diamond FX before, which I was happy with. Guess I just didn't know what I was missing because I swear I will never go back! I still love my Diamond FX colors but I am a Wolfe girl from now on when it comes to black and white! Thanks Melinda for recommending it to me in another thread.... Very Happy

Clowngirl, I thought so too and got teased about it but I noticed a big difference. Not when you paint them on side-by-side but there is something in TAG white that makes it crack and "roll" when you run your hand over it when it's in teardrop/linework form (thicker)

I was using DFX white too but it has a slight grey cast to it so I just switched to Wolfe because it's brighter and doesn't dull. There is a goop issue with Wolfe but now that I'm a more controlled painter I don't get that unless it's a really long event and it's absorbed a lot of water. I keep my 90 gm separate and refill half of a 52 gm split I have so I'm only using 25 gms at a time and it keeps my 90 cleaner and from absorbing water and getting goopy.

Dear Wolfe White/Wolfe Black Admiration Nation:

This summer I painted 18 days in a row, six hours a day.
I loved it.
Here are some observations:
Wolfe White is the best.
Distilled water works better than tap water or spring water.

TAG turns into a gloppy congealed mess that looks like sour cream.
Doesn't taste like sour cream.

Damn.

Melinda, don't know whether to Laughing or be a little pale Reminds me of when my first baby got into a bottle of black acrylic craft paint. Luckily she was in jammies so most of it got on those.

His sister (2 years old) managed to lift my unlocked fatmax and retrive the paint. She then procedeed to paint her brother and herself.......... All this while I am trying to take a picture of the OLDER sister in the backyard. I was gone MAYBE 2 minutes and came back to my baby attempting to perform in black face. VERY offensive and upsetting Razz
Also, Tag black was very opaque when activated with spit.
Something to think about Ladys Wink
