New to me Practice Heads YAY!!!!!

Post by kingsmeadmama on Fri Jan 18, 2013 10:35 am

I just called a hairdressing school and asked if they might have some used practice heads that I could buy. They told me no, because the students end up shaving them right down. I explained that I didn't need the hair, I needed the face for facepainting practice. He asked me how many I wanted (I'd like 2), and asked if I could come in on Monday morning. When I asked him how much he wanted for them, he told me I could have them for FREE!!!!!!

cheers bounce cheers bounce cheers bounce

I am soooooooo excited! It's such a small thing, but we're on a really tight budget right now, so this is a HUGE blessing for me Smile

I thought that this might be helpful for some of my other newbie pals - maybe there is a beauty school near you that might be willing to part with some of their used heads.

I love my practice heads! Not only are they great for practicing painting, but you can leave them in random places around the house to freak people out. The refrigerator, for example.

that is how I got mine--The faces aren't perfect, they seem a little smaller than real faces, but they work great!

I am new to face painting & just bought a Superstar practice head & using Snazaroo and Grimas face paints. I have just tried to apply a coat of clown white by Snazaroo to my new practice head with sponge and it is really patchy. Any help appreciated on application methods as it is something i really would like to do.

When using a sponge, the amount of water makes a huge difference in the consistency and application of base colors. You may have to really work the water into the paint to get a nice creamy thick consistency that will apply smoothly. Also try using a stippling / dabbing motion.

i googled clown white and it seems to be water based but has a creamy texture so it can be applied without adding water. the amount of moisture in it already may be part of the problem.

have you tried regular cake face paint? also, if your practice head has a smoother surface, it may be more difficult for the paint to stick.

in have seen several YouTube videos and read reviews of the new plastic practice boards - face paint adheres well and doesn't stain them, and cleans off well.
they can also be used as display boards if you like changing your designs frequently, if you protect them from moisture.
they down side is they are flat, so don't approximate the shape of a face.

The most important thing about practice heads is this...
You MUST name them!
I have Headley LaMarr, Stainy McStainerson, and Teenage Head.

so true!

i have 2 - "irene" (rhymes with styrene, because it's a styrofoam/polystyrene head, my 1st cheap purchase),

and "chelli" (pronounced "shelly" because it's actually a face shell that fits on a practice head, my 2nd cheap purchase), i put it over irene, so now irene is two-faced, lol Razz

but my favorite is my own "practice" arm, because real skin is the best surface.

Dear AnnaBB:
I adopted Headley LaMarr from Miss Ronnie.
And... I was a terrible adoptive mother!
I left her behind at Face Paint University.
Sean and Janna Avram took custody. They researched "Headley LaMarr" "LaMarr" "Hedley LaMar" etc., and could find no record of her appearance.
They were both coming down to Fantasy Fest in Key West, and they took Headley with them. I have never, ever, ever, asked anyone for an autograph. My hubster is an amazing photographer, and, I have never askedhis most famous clients for their autographs. I have done make up for Ryan Gosling, Nev Campbell, etc., and I never asked for their autographs.
I asked Janna and Sean Avram to sign the back of Headley's head. About 20 minutes later, I got rained into a body painting booth on Duvall street with Madelyn Greco and Nick Wolfe... and I asked them to sign Headley. They did! I think Headley is so proud to wear their marks on her head.
