Canopies...tents for fairs and festivals...

Post by Jobena1 on Fri Jan 25, 2013 6:29 pm

PRE-APPLOGY FOR LONG POST>>>I know there are a few threads regarding this matter...I have a pop-up..aka EZ up commercial tent that I bought early last year...it succumbed to a torrential downpour and bent the frame...lucky for me my freind (who is the director of the county fair) has multiple bend up frames from previous accidents over the years he Frankensteined it to brand new.. Thanks to the FAce PAinting GODS!!!....Well here is the deal....He was saying the State Fair Board has brought up the issue of POP up tents(EZ ups) at the registered fairs...they are going to ban them...yup no longer are you allowed to have an EZ up for your tent .It will go into effect in the very near future..technically they are not made for extended periods of time as I was told. Soooo has anyone ran across this? I know I applied to be a face painter at the State Fair and they looked at my photos and said we would love your set up (yes they judge the look of your setup before deciding on whom they pick..OK it is a state fair I agree nothing like a crappy looking set up) but we cant allow a EZ UP/Pop up....I asked what they suggested and I will get it...ahem....$2000.00 pipe and drape tent....yup...ONE thousand Dollars...the reasoning for that...it has a wind test of 80 miles a hour and can actually withstand snowfall...I could set up and park my car under it during the winter....soooo I have been on Google and found several manufacturers ....does anyone use these? I even asked why they stopped using EZ ups...he said first off during rain and wind we find them too dangerous...secondly they dont want to deal with a "messed up looking Fair" Ok I agree nothing like looking a little junkyard with bent up, duck taped tents...hehe. Any thoughts? I will be able to use my EZ up for short 1-2 festivals and fairs ect...so all is not lost.

Hmmm that is interesting since I have been contacted for a festival here...do you have a link to the type of setup they have suggested? I have not bought any type of tent yet but plan on investing in 1 before summer.

They are pipe tents....Ace Canopy is one of the sellers around 799.85 for a 10x10 set up with out base feet...They are literally 6-9 foot pieces of pipe that go together with joint fittings....I imagine you would need atleast 2 people to set up and anchor it. If it is a oneday festival an EZ Up might be the ticket...I will not ever leave my EZ up overnight unattended..unless I absolutely know there is not a raindrop in sight. Nothing that sucks more to turn a corner and see your tent buckled to the ground with 75 gallons of water on the canopy. UGH!! affraid

Well the gig I got booked for is 3hrs for 5days straight. It may be better to just get a tent that can be setup and left...this will be my first big gig so I don't really have a game plan yet. Shocked I am very glad it isn't until July!

Well if the weather is good you might be able to get away with a Pop-up...I did 8 full weeks last year with the tent set up for 5-10 days set up each time...I was under it for atleast 12 hrs a day so I really didnt mind it being up...I was able to lower it and pull the corner in case of heavy rain. But really lucked out most of the days until the "Big County Fair Incident" still crying about that one..lol

Well that just plain sucks, Jobena1!!!! I hope the New York State Fair doesn't succumb to this kind of policy.

What is absolutely cray-cray is that those pipes CAN and DO fly apart in high winds and are much more lethal flying through the air than EZ up tents.

Well its in the future for large events from what I understand...My freind is involved in large events in 8 states on the East Coast...he said in a lot of the meetings the subject is brought up. I guess at some point the large Fairs just may do the "no pop up policy" I know the tent I was directed to has locked in pieces and I found someone who has used the same one for 11 years..going in to 12th year. Never had a issue to date and he uses it in the winter to keep his firewood dry close to his outdoor furnace. So I might bite the bullet and get one...he said they have about a 2 inch pipe diameter. I think it was economy tents. or something like it..my problem is the weight of the tent..I meat I can throw it in the bed of the truck but what a pain the arse to have to haul 180 lbs of pipe and canopy. plus equipment... Shocked

They are practically impossible to put up alone for most women... unless you have super-strength or super-powers. I've seen strong men sweat and struggle putting them together and taking them apart.

They are quite sturdy but are not a sure thing in a storm... nothing is.

Pipe and drain is heavy at 1 steel but easy to put together with thumb screws and a few goes. And when you are new $1000 seems like a lot to invest, but its not in the long haul of a business my total booth is valued at easy well over $1000.I have summer and winter setups, can work in the desert or snow. And I actually add pipe and drain to my popup now to stabilized the frame, and have the mid bars for other usage. My booth have been juried several times over.

Some state fairs provide the pipe and drain and you can pay 3 grand for the rental. It varies in price so much from a popup for a street fair to pipe and drain rental for a state fair.

And people think being a face painter is cheap to get into......

I been checking into many sites regarding this issue...the state fair will rent me a tent for an additional 850.00 for that week...not to mention the 750.00 for vending fee and another 950.00 for the camper hook up for the grounds...I know we can recoup the vendor/campsite fee...I just cant justify paying to rent a tent for that price. I am going to bite the proverbial bullet and purchase one. Crying or Very sad
