Lol I'm at almost $100 for today. My lovely pallet and a cape for my princess dress, if that counts towards painting supplies? lol shhhhhh! I will be in so much trouble if a certain someone finds out!

Re: SFX starter kit

Post by Sweet Loretta on Fri Feb 08, 2013 1:27 pm

I teach a great FX starter and intermediate class. And do travel to teach. If you are on the west coast come see me at the West Coast Haunters Convention in late May/early June. And I think Ill be at the Mid-West Haunters Convention, but not teaching a class just demoing at a booth.

We had a blast last year in my WCHC beginners class. This year I am teaching a class on pros-aide transfers. Today one of my staff is airbrushing my hair, but too I am pouring faux glass for FX effects too, fun. And pouring some molds from Dragon Skin which is what they made the Dark Knights costume out of for the last movie. Plus I have an exciting FX project coming up I'll share soon. Remember it is like anything you have to practice to get the look you want.

Kits along with Kryolan FX wheels as mentioned I suggest Kryolan Fresh Scratch blood effects. Love that stuff!

My kit consists of very basic items:
Latex (heard elmer's glue is good too but never used it)
spirt gum & remover (which I use on some occasions)
Kleenex
Oatmeal
Thick Blood
Runny Blood
Eye shadow & white cream foundation (I color the foundation with eye shadow)
3D gel (not required)
black cream eye liner
Black kohl
Wolfe Face paint

Re: SFX starter kit

Post by Kammy on Tue Feb 26, 2013 9:42 am

I'm a complete beginner in this, but my kit so far is:

Derma Wax
Basic set of steel tools (found them for about 5.00 on eBay, they do fine)
Face paints (I don't use bruise/trauma wheels, though I'd quite like some)
Latex Milk (I use Kryolan)
Gelatiney stuff (it's a technical term, honest. I have Kryolan Gelafix)
Runny film blood (dark)
Blood syrup (lighter)
Cake blood (I just use Snaz's)
Blood (congealed-type) paste
Baby oil (stops my hands sticking to the wax)
Tissue (for burns, etc.)
Mehron barrier spray
Spray plaster (don't know what you'd call it - you can get Opsite and Elastoplast ones, I sometimes use it to help "seal" the wax after a tutorial I saw)
Clear face powder (to stop latex or wax from being so sticky)

Much of that stuff was just gathered from around the apartment, and has now gone into my "let's make horrific things" box.

Miss Ronnie, you're downright fabulous. I love you

Kammy x

P.S. Someone told me on FB recently that a mixture of KY jelly and face paint makes an amazing pus or runny blood!!! lol!

Re: SFX starter kit

Post by rthling on Tue Feb 26, 2013 10:53 am

This is a good recipe for the prosthetic pieces I have used.
This past Halloween, I learned that making pieces on my clean counter made it quicker, because I could just apply and do the makeup around it, rather than spend the time building it directly on the skin. (Although, there are times that process works best)
I used it to do trauma scenes for a drama our church put on. I'll be using it to create torn flesh on our Jesus character for our Easter program, as well.

Here's another great tutorial on the Walking Dead makeup. Great info on SFX creation and application.

I don't have a "burn wheel", but I used a combination of face paint and starblends to do the makeup part. I also used regular cosmetics.

For blood, I used corn syrup with food coloring added. I made some bright red and some dark red for old and new blood.

This was done with tissue and liquid latex.

This was done with the gelatin mixture above. I liked this best, because it was much more flexible and realistic. I used this effect in the scenes of our drama.

Yes to teaching in Ohio, and thanks to others who have emailed me about FX classes.

I spent the morning pouring FX glass. So fun, I am getting ready to embed a big chunk of glass in Brandon one on my models. I done the arms and face, but planing now to shoot the back with big glass and most likely the eye...
