Tonto's Face Paint 2013

Post by Masquer08er on Sat Feb 16, 2013 5:04 pm

I'm looking for a way to duplicate the face paint used on the 2013 version of Tonto (Depp). I would like to use more authentic products (even if I have to make them). Product or ingredient purchase info would be most helpful.

I'm thinking kaolin for the white cracked part.

I'm confused by the request for "more authentic products" -- you do know that Depp's makeup is based on a painting by Kirby Sattler, right? Sattler's a non-Native artist whose claim to fame is that he paints images of how the majority culture sees Natives, unrestrained by actual fact. So to do Depp's makeup "authentically", you need film makeup.

I like the design. I want to learn how to do it using authentic products. I have done research on the design. The black stripes are used to mourn the dead. I have talked to Native American friends who think it's cool. BTW, Depp was adopted by a Comanche tribe. I would not second guess a Comanche tribe.

It's fine to like it. Just remember that you're liking an image of an imaginary Indian painted by a white man. And that some REAL Native/First Nations people may find it offensive.

As far as being adopted by the Comanche or receiving gifts from the Navajo, the leaders of those nations speak only for themselves. As do your Native friends.

I would not want to offend. I guess I'll just do the Irish thing and dress like a leprechaun (since I'm Irish) Wink

I found the answer. Asked the friend I referred to. So you helped me find the answer. Learned so much more than just about face paint. I love learning about other cultures.
