What do you love about FPing?

Post by Katurah on Sat Feb 23, 2013 11:35 pm

People always ask, why did I choose Face Painting as a hobby. I always hear "It's quite unusual" to pick this as I hobby and I would agree Very Happy

So, I'm curious everyone! Why do you loving face painting?

As for me, I am a total people person. I love meeting new people, and making new friends (even if they are the little children, in fact that makes it better Smile) I find that when I paint people it takes the awkwardness out of meeting someone. It's so much easier to talk to people which you are painting them! In fact that's how I spent my first night in the dorms in college, painting and meeting new friends!!

You can learn so much about someone whether they are in the chair or 30 secs or 30 minutes! I actually love adding details to paintings so I have an excuse to talk longer Very Happy

What about you all?

I wanted something flexible, part-time and creative...the fun is the bonus. I've recently come to really love and appreciate my fellow painters here in UT/ID as we've started having jams and get-togethers. Just the icing on the cake.

For face painting:
I spent a summer working at a medical camp; they needed a face painter and I had an art background.

I love the moment when I child loooks in the mirror and thinks "Wow! I'm a bear/bug/butterfly/dragon/etc..." I love that face paint washes off - someone gets to play dress up as many times as they want!

The summer camp where I first worked had the garbage-y dollar store paints and I really tried with them...and then I went onto google and discovered Snaz. After Snaz I tried DFX, then I found the forum...Tag, Wolfe, Paradise, Kryolan, in a nutshell "Me like pretty colors."

But...
I was interested in henna from the moment I saw it slapped onto my cousin's hand at her henna party (her eldest is 13, so it's been awhile). I didn't do anything about that interest though (from a business standpoint) until last year.

I took my fun hobby and interest to business level because I needed PT/Weekend work, I wanted something creative, and I like helping people celebrate an event.

Just like Denise, I wanted something flexible, part-time and creative. But I started off baking and decorating cakes and cupcakes (I've baked up to hundreds of cupcakes for bake sales before).

I was interested in face painting for a while but, as lame as it sounds, I was afraid of trying because I didn't want to be a failure. It wasn't until I found out my older cousin was doing face painting that I decided "why not?" and started buying supplies here and there.
I think I started with nothing but a DFX essential palette, 2 brushes, sparkles, and a few gems.
After painting on them for a while, I became addicted and now have a $230 kit Laughing

It's so much fun, and being able to have artistic freedom is just fantastic. My art teacher at school is the "my way or the highway" type of teacher, and it frustrates me. So being able to dictate what I want to do (artistically) on faces is like sweet freedom haha

I love the fact that I don't have to find someplace to put my newest artistic design...it just walks away - with the addition of a big happy smile on it's owner's face. Smile After all there are only so many places where you can put a picture, a pillow, or a flower arrangement.

I too wanted something that was flexible, paid decent and was fun to do. Face Painting is all of those. I don't have an art background and I didn't really think I could facepaint because I can't draw very well. I am not the best face painter but I always do my best to make the experience a great one for the person in my chair. Its so much fun to make a special memory for a child.

I love opening my kit and seeing all those wonderful colors.

I love the moment the child looks in the mirror and their jaw drops open.

I love when children come back to stare at themselves, transfixed by what they see.

I love creating different faces, even if every single child asks for the same butterfly face as the previous child.

I love when I paint a child at SickKids and they fall asleep toward the end of the face painting. I feel so trusted. I know the brushes and sponges are soft and soothing.

I love glitter.

I love bling.

I love that every event, every party, my job is different.

I love watching my progression since I found this Forum and have been influenced by some amazing artists.

I love seeing the progression in other painters' work.

I get paid to do what I love.

Aaaaaaannd, my psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis disappear when I paint day after day. Therefore, Face Painting must be GOOD for me.

I have eczema, and I've noticed on days when I paint, or if I'm irritated, I pick up a paint brush and I don't have any troubles. It's like a not so cheap therapy Very Happy

I love that I can create something "wow" in 5 minutes... I am not a patient person. I can't do art that takes weeks on end. Smile

I love (like Shadowdrawing) that my canvas says thanks and goes away. I get to create and create but don't have all my artwork cluttering up the place.

I love this forum and all the amazing people on it.

I love learning new things all the time.

I love love love the "I'm a TIGER, RAWR!" moment in the mirror. That's really why we do it, isn't it? Smile

And yes, must have ALL THE SHINY COLOURS! I am a magpie.

It's one of the few jobs I've ever had that I don't find stressful! I also love talking to the people and kids and I love the excited look of all ages when they see their face. It's just a "fee good" job!

I love that moment when you show them the mirror and at first their faces are blank while they take everything in. Then they see the whole thing and beam at you. When I first started painting, I didn't understand that it takes people a few seconds to understand what they are seeing -- I thought that pause was because they hated it and were trying to find something nice to say. But I've had several
FP and beautician friends tell me that pause is common and not to worry.

I love when every kid I've painted as a tiger looks in the mirror and roars.

I love when I can see the piece come together. It starts as just random elements and then you add an outline or a new color and pop! It's there!
