Nervous? I'm getting ready to freak!

Post by shadowdrawing on Sun Mar 17, 2013 3:20 pm

I have a large job coming up on Saturday and I have spent a month getting ready for it as it is my first job of this year. I re-did my signs and created packages with dress-up add-ons for the kids. Thinking about next weekend is FREAKIN ME OUT! How do you battle your nerves? And WOW...I really hope everything fits in my car Smile

Dear shadowdrawing:
I am also nervous before a big event.
My hand will be a little shaky on the first face.
Then... I will be fine.
I think my nervousness is a sign that I am striving to get better all the time. When I get complacent, it means I am not willing to put myself out there, artistically speaking.
Embrace your nervousness.
I embrace mine!
At least... that is what I am telling myself as I sit here, writing this message with shaky hands, as I am getting ready to set up at Club 3030 to paint St. Paddy's Day designs for the staff and patrons. The thing I am most nervous about is that I may be painting the sister-in-law of the Forum's own "Perfectly Painted Faces by Janna".
What if I forget how to face paint?
I am nervous.
And,
I have been face painting for 15 years.

I also get nervous, it has gotten better with time but used to be really bad. And the poor birthday child would be the 1 st one to go. I start with painting something on the arm, you can do snake or a rainbow, etc. for some reason it calms my nerves and then I can move to the face. I only do this with the guest of honor since he is usually the first. Smile
Good luck next Saturday, I'll be painting for 3 hours for an Easter brunch event.
Good luck tomorrow Eva! afro

This! Why do we always have to do the birthday child first? Very Happy I'd be so much better if they were third or fourth. Always nervous before every job. The bigger the job, the more nerves. Doesn't even go away on the 'freebies'.

I always feel for the 1st kiddo, they are never the best, and usually the Honorary child. I have a 3 day festival that I have to do a complete booth for Labor Day weekend, super psyched. I am use to the pumpkin festival which is high Vol but requires noting more than me and a board to go. I started Last Fall so this is my first Summer at it and I feel over whelmed but in a good way Embarassed

The nerves are normal, it just means you care alot. Do your best to be organized and you will be fine. Some times if I am really nervous, I listen to some mellow music on the way, it seems to do a good job of relaxing me. Good luck, let us know how it goes

Lisa – Have I ever told you that I love your posts? Very Happy How did the St Patty designs and the sister-in-law go? I’m going to try to embrace the nervousness! Lots of practice this week!

Eva – I look at some of the designs I paint and think “well that was crap” and then people rave about it. We are always hardest on ourselves. I’m usually baffled that people like a design that I hated. Shocked

Maggie, Kara, and Nikki – Oh…the poor first child. Embarassed I have not yet done a birthday party, but at festivals I usually pull the first child in from the crowd and do a free face paint on them. At least they didn’t pay for the shaking hand! I also find that an empty chair does not entice parents to bring their adored child to the lonely face painter. Smile Good luck on your event Maggie and Nikki!

Veelux – Organization is my middle name! I’m always afraid I will forget something or run out of something - so I end up with more than I need! I’m thinking I need to make a new playlist for my IPod for when I am on my way to an event. I’m thinking of calling the playlist “I’m freaked and I know it.” What do you think? Cool

I was watching on FabaTV - that you should take paper along and practice your basic strokes for 5 minutes before you start. Just to warm up your painting muscles. I’m going to give it a try next weekend. My only thought is that with my pickiness for presentation…will I have 5 minutes to spare?

Also, any thoughts on where you are positioned at an event? I was told that I am right at the entrance door. I can’t make up my mind if it is a good thing or a bad thing…

I don't feel nervous for birthday parties if I don't have them too close in time, then I worry about getting the next one on time, little bit nervous for corporate events, but "Pay per face"events freak me out, and sometimes doesn't go away during the event cause you sit there half day waiting for costumers and them late in the afternoon you get a line you are not sure if you can get thru it before close time.

Dear shadowdrawing:
Thank you for liking my posts.
I am not a writer.
It is a labor to write.
I would rather paint it than write it.
I feel like I am ripping my soul out of my chest to attempt to express myself in the written word.
Having said that...
I was in a cozy section in the middle of a restaurant/bar/club. The table next to me volunteered their 20-ish year old brother to be painted. We came up with the idea of a snake, because St. Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland. We chatted. He relaxed. I relaxed. He loved his face. I loved my work. (I just painted for 7 days straight at an indoor carnival for 8 hours a day with three other very talented face painters. My work has changed in the last week.) As he was leaving...
I looked at him and realized
I FORGOT HIS FANGS!
He went out toothless.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaauuuuuuuuggggggghhhhhhh!!!!!

The night went on swimmingly. No duplications: Green Tiger, Shamrocks and Green Roses, Elfish Metal Forehead Tiaras with Gems, Green and Teal Princess Masks, Green and Gold Eye Designs, Green Zombie, Green Beard, Rainbow Figure 8 up, over and under the eyes and matching Rainbow Lips (Thank you to the Face Paint Forum Lip Design Contest), Shamrocks and Glitter, etc.

I loved painting mostly adults.
I cannot believe how STILL they can sit!!!!!!

We will have to hear if I did a good job if Janna's sister-in-law tells her how I did.

I know I had a great time.

Now, it is my day off....
doing laundry, ironing, washing anti-fatigue floor mats from the event. (I miss the summer, when I would take the flooring to the car wash and use the power washer to clean them, instead of my downstairs shower stall. I cannot wait to finish all this icky house cleaning so I can spend some time with my kit refilling colors and cleaning up my FatMax. That is like a meditation to me.

Lisa - I immediately thought of the dragon from "How to Train your Dragon" I'm sure he didn't notice he had no fangs Smile

My event went well. Painted a lot of tigers and swirls. I learned a lot. Smile

I tried out a word art board for my designs so I could do fast faces as I needed. I also had some pictures around just to show my work. Everyone picked the designs from the pictures and not the design board. So I guess I will be going back to the picture design board. Needless to say, I did not end up painting quickly - average about 6 people per hour. WAY TOO SLOW! Thats what I get for putting up pictures of the more complicated designs. Lots of compliments, but not lots of money.

I also tried out add-ons - feather boas, princess crowns, flower hair clips, fairy wings, flashing teeth, cowboy hats, bandannas, etc. I had a display stand for them and everything. To avoid sales tax I was only selling them as part of a face paint package. I even had special package with discounts on certain items. I didn't sell a single one! Totally bummed.

I was also placed right inside the door where the raffles were, in a very narrow area across from other vendors. I was a little too busy to notice, but if I was one of those vendors I don't think I would've been happy that people couldn't get to me because of the face painting line.

Dear shadowdrawing:
Speed comes with time.
Speed comes with practice.
It is better to face paint well, than to face paint fast.
Don't sweat the timing.

I have begun to ask parents if their birthday child is mature enough to go last. Whatever the birthday child has... everyone else wants it, too... and I like to bling up the birthday child. I have not had to paint a birthday child first in two years. It works out so beautifully that way.

Happy Painting!
