Made my First Sushi Cakes!

Post by Gretchen on Fri Mar 22, 2013 10:14 pm

I have been having waaaay too much fun making sushi cakes today! Here's what I came up with, along with a few photos of how I made them. No clue if this is the best way to make them but it worked for me! The creepy eyeball one I intended to be for boy designs, like maybe a spider's body. But it looked so much like an eye I had to paint one! Ha! I love how the gem one turned out, and how it's rimmed in gold.

How I made the "bubble" cake:

How I made the peacock cake:

I'd love an excuse to make more...if you use sushi cakes, what do you use them for the most? I want to do some with more small, tighter rings toward the center so I can use smaller pouncers on them!

OK, got a challenge for you--how about a belly-sized sushi cake, add a few swirls/stencil and you can knock out an event line of mummy-tummies! (JK Razz )

Hmmm...sorry, don't understand this question as I didn't thank a denise??

Anywhoo...thanks so much for the comments! They turned out way cooler than I expected! Now I want to make more! Ha ha...great idea for a giant belly cake!! I'm doing a bunch of bellies next month at a "community baby shower"...that would certainly be one way to speed things up!! ;-) I think next I'll try one with thinner rings that are even all the way around...maybe start making one from the center out instead of the outside in. Hmmm...

How about making them using the same technique as polymer clay rods... Anyone know what I'm talking about? The drawback would be making them in large batches. I suppose you could sell the extra cakes.

I think that the appreciation for Denise comes from her willingness to share her knowledge and the time she puts in on the YouTube videos to make it easier for folks. We all certainly appreciate your talent as well Rebecca. Very Happy

OH yes...Denise Cold...Denise is certainly a huge inspiration! I Just watched her video on chapstick sushi's and I ordered some empty chapstick tubes. Can't wait to try them! And yes, PrairiePainter, I was thinking about that too...I have a lot of polymer clay and tools and know just what you mean. But yeah, you could make them in a big cylinder and slice them into multiple cakes...if I ever were to sell them that would be the way to go! Mass production! But I bet you could roll the paint through a clay roller / pasta machine just the same to get really uniform thickness. Might have to try that. I was also thinking about using different diameters of drinking straws to cut perfect circles!

I would think that thanking Denise isn't about her creating them in the first place. I believe Rebecca did. But Denise did create them in a chapstick tube, and even made a youtube video about how to do it.
