Low carb diet - tough but working

Post by martha on Tue Apr 09, 2013 9:33 am

Just had to share. Now down 21.5 lbs in six weeks. Very encouraged since I'm 53 and menopausal with no time to exercise.

Wow! Nice work. Are you doing any specific program? I got a Carb Addicts book at the thrift store but it's not the original. I'm thinking of ordering the original book.

Hey martha! That's what I'm on, too. I was on it for almost a full month until I got sick 2 weeks ago. I just started back up yesterday. I am on a modified plan. It works.... and the cravings for any "bad" carbs are just vague memories now. And the only exercise I get is at physical therapy.

No specific program. Did South Beach several years ago and lost 60 lbs in a year. Didn't need to lose that much. Another 20 will be a great weight for this grandma. Am just watching carbs that are simply sugar in disguise Wink

Denise, I'm not sure I would bother with the book...although I do love books myself. Most of the recipes I've seen in them are pretty out there. Web search would do you just as much good or we can use this thread as a carb Q & A.

I am, too! 9.5 pounds down. I lost 55 lbs low-carbing over the course of a year in 2002-2003. I kept it off beautifully for a long time, too.

Good work!

Great job !

let the summer begin right ? Wink haha

i started 'a diet ' too.

I'm a really big snacker Embarassed Cookies, chocolate , everything dissapears in to my mouth haha And not once or twice a day , no the WHOLE day

I stopped doing that 2 days ago and I was shocked when I stepped on the scales this morning.

- 3 kg !!!

omg......I knew sugar was bad but ...............wow 2 days??

A friend of mine quit relish and drinking 2 wines a day and she lost 15 kg in 2 months.

Only by doing that .

I did actually cut out diet drinks because of the Aspartame, it was causing me serious cognition problems. I've also been going to the rec center gym for a few weeks and I did 30 minutes on an elliptical machine the other day! I like that I'm getting my muscle tone back (I've always been a tough tomboy type) but I'm still retaining water and haven't lost much weight. So now that I'm having a little bit of success, I guess I have to start looking at diet more...boo, hiss. I think cutting carbs will also help with the water and tiredness...again, boo, hiss.

I lost 55 also, several years back. Didn't cut carbs but switched to all whole grain, and of course upped my intake of vegetables. One thing that I think worked well and surprised me was the addition of healthy oils to my diet. Cut butter, but added a decent amount of olive oil and flax oil and macadamia nut oil.

I used the oil on salads. A lot of people mistakenly eat salad with low to no oil, but then the vitamin A of many of the veggies cannot be absorbed. Vitamin A is an oil-soluble vitamin.

I also cut out meat, which for me, seems to have been one of them main things.

After I spent a year losing all those pounds, I wound up being able to eat MORE each day, because my metabolism had re-vamped itself with the dietary changes.

Good luck everyone! It CAN be done, and you can do it!!

I lost 60 in just a few months back about 10 years ago on the Protein Power Plan... didn't do a darn thing as far as exercise. I kept it off pretty nicely until my colon perforated in late 2006 - that's when my health went all to h*ll...

I have had a hard time going back on the protein thing until now. But once you get in the groove, it really does completely eradicate all cravings for the stuff you think you can't live without...like, bread, pasta, chips, cookies, chocolate, etc. You must drink lots of water, though, or you can do kidney damage. Your body goes into "ketosis", which signifies you are burning fat for energy. You can check this using ketone strips - available at the pharmacy.

The reason it works so well for me is because everything I eat is easily digestible for my screwed up digestive system and a colon that is pretty much shot. Meat and poultry breaks down so much easier for my system than anything else. If anyone wants a breakdown of what to eat and how it works, just pm me.
