HENNA IN THE U.S.?

Post by saloner on Mon Apr 29, 2013 2:37 pm

I would like to buy the powder....anyone know of a reputable supplier in the U.S.?

I went to the favorite face painting stores but they only offer sets that do a few.

Henna Caravan sells henna powder too, and I think they are located in California, much closer to you:

Henna Caravan is my favorite place to buy henna from. I've had REALLY good customer services experiences.

Henna Page (or mehndi.com) is considered the top place for henna knowledge, and they also have a really really really amazing store. You can spend a lifetime reading all of her henna information.

It's AmerikanBodyArt. She has the link in her post above. I second that. The customer service is attentive and terrific.

Mansgurl -
I highly advise you make your own paste. It's really really really not that hard. If I can do it (and I'm the idiot that gets lost going in a straight line), really anyone can do it.
The reason for my stance is that:
1) Paste requires more/less sugar depending on location. A paste made in Florida might not do you any favors in Philly b/c the humidity, temperature, etc is different.
2) If you buy paste from anywhere other than right down the block or around the corner, you've got to deal with shipping. The USPS is many things, but a climate controlled environment is not one of them. It is easy for paste to change texture in a super hot train or truck.
3) Paste has a short shelf life before the dye starts to loose efficacy.
4) While none of the places mentioned above use preservatives or worse (Black henna is NOT HENNA!) some "artists" are less than scrupulous. It's always better to know exactly what was put into your paste, and the best way to do that is to make it yourself.

The lovely ladies at Henna Page (Tap Dancing Lizard) and at Henna Caravan are top notch resources. Henna Muse is also excellent.

They all excel at hand-holding (I speak from experience).

Henna Caravan has a KISS recipe that has yet to fail me and comes with step-by-step pictures. http://www.hennacaravan.com/how/mix.html

Same with Erica ... from amerikan art... she has allllll kinds of videos on her site. she is very helpful and has GREAT products!. I highly recommend her. I would say make your own as well... but you could always buy a small amount of premixed ans see what YOU think! Good luck... MONNA
