how do you paint extra hyper kids?

Post by nikkili26 on Tue May 28, 2013 8:29 pm

Both of my children are extremely hyper. Not only is it difficult to get them to sit down, but once they sit, they are constantly bouncing, wiggling, talking, flinching...just MOVING! I am doing my first party this weekend and I am scared! I know many children can sit still, but what if there are some kids like mine? What is the proper etiquette? How should I approach it? With my own kids, I get them done by telling them their turn is over and I move to the next sibling....but I don't want to have half painted kids at this upcoming party. How can I avoid this?I've come up with some extremely quick and simple designs, like a spot of nose paint, some eye lashes, an animal muzzle, cheek hearts, rainbows or tear drops around the eyes.....but many times my children can barely sit still long enough for this much....I do manage some beautiful designs, but this will be my first party and I'm so nervous....! Please help.any advice is invited.

Also, I use high density sponges and round brushes...I have a few flat brushes too. Are there any other tools that might help me speed my paint time?I've been reading the forums and saw something about Martha Stewart daubers but couldn't locate them...any similar recommendations?

I guess my main issue here is I don't want smudged designs from too much bouncing around.is this unrealistic?

Ironically, I've had at least a dozen parents tell me that they were surprised that their child sat still for the face painting and that's the best they've ever been. One was a little man about 5 that I had to get out of my paints, from under the table, etc....when he was being painted he closed his eyes and was great the whole time. His family was shocked. Of course he went right back to it when he was done. Smile

Most children behave better than mine when being painted.
In 15 years...
I don't want to admit this...
I have only poked one child in the eye with a paint brush...
MINE!!!!!!

At SickKids Hospital, there are children with conditions that involve involuntary movements. I seem to be just fine with them. I feel my own children must think I know what they are going to do, and I should anticipate their actions. I am not a mind reader. Therefore I unintentionally poked Madison in the eye when she decided to lunge for the mirror. About five years later, I had her watch some videos with children with "personality" being painted. She finally understood about the final product is more important than personality. It took a long time.

Other people's children behave better than me than my own children. I feel like a bad mom saying this outloud.

I agree with the above sentiments. Kids repeatedly amaze their parents when they crawl into the chair to be face painted.

For extra wiggly ones, we take "wiggle breaks" where they can do a quick stretch, waggle arms everywhere.
"Okay, ready, crazy wiggles! Okay, ready, 1, 2, 3 sit superduper sit still!"
It works. Mostly.

I will also place my hand on top of their head so I have some control of their movement, ala, Margi Kanter.

If they're that wiggly, nobody is going to care that your lines aren't perfect.

Ive found most kids behave for me, probably coz theyre not mine. Mine dont sit still for me, infact they dont let me near them with a brush most of the time now!

For the wrigglers I tell them if they dont sit still "I might paint a big black line across their face and wouldnt that look silly!", and if they really cant sit still they get some fast flowers and tear drops.

I also always paint a dot or stick a gem on the middle of my head (obviously incorporated into a design. Might look a bit funny otherwise!), then I tell them to stare at that dot/gem and "I really need you to keep an eye on that dot/gem for me, incase it grows legs and runs away".... they usually have a laugh at that and that kind of relaxes them a bit, and some take it seriously and stare intently at my forehead Laughing

Oh and I also get them to sit right back in the chair, and rest their head on my hand.

But in general - kids behave well for anyone that isnt their parent!

Most kids tend to sit really still with me, maybe because I'm a stranger? I always have a fun wig on and my own face painted so they tend to look at me, if that doesn't work, I have a cute toy dinosaur on a necklace that teens to capture their attention. Smile

I have them close their eyes and put each hand on my leg. Then I verbalize what I am doing.  That seems to be doing ok for me.

Saw Nick W. suggest that they curl their toes--tried it, & although I had to keep reminding the squirmer (who can KEEP their toes curled for any length of time?!) it worked!

And if none of the above work... I kick them out of the chair and call "Next!"... after fair warning.

and I have done it too!

Have them close their eyes. Amazing how much they calm down when they can't see. I have had kids with cheek art, and made them keep their eyes closed the whole time. Really cuts down on distractions for the little wigglers.

I don't.  If they can't sit still I won't paint them.  I have a fear of poking kids in the eye and a parent suing me.  The only reason I even say that is I heard a mom say it once.  Yes the mom was a nasty piece of work (and I can say that) and I am biased here because she was my husband's ex-wife, but thankfully I wasn't the face painter.
