New personal record....proud or not?

Post by Sandie on Mon Jul 08, 2013 8:32 pm

So, I did 31 kids in one hour and 5 min. Super simple cheek designs, cranking them out. Happy I got them all done, but not happy to be doing such simple cheek designs. Mixed feelings for sure!! Rolling Eyes

My daughter and I did a corporate gig again this spring and this time, I made sure we kept the tickets that the kids were given for the "events". One ticket per child...at the end of four hours we had over 145 tickets and just had our simple $5 festival designs out.

Did 37 in an hour and twenty minutes once, volunteering at a homeless shelter. Four designs, like one-eyed butterflies and skulls. It was the repetition of the designs that allowed my speed to max out. Wasn't my favorite kind of painting, but the kids did love having it, and it was fun.

Kind of embarrassed to show this ultra simplistic cheek art board Embarassed†Knew I would be doing A LOT of 3-7 year olds for the gig so geared it to them. Did all but 2 of the designs.

Even with those designs (which are very cute), I donít think I couldíve done as many as you did in that timeframe. As long as the kids and clients were happy, thatís all that matters - But I totally understand your conflict since we try so hard to make people realize that face painting is NOT what it used to be.

Thanks, Evie. Using Starblends for the base color really helped speed things up...and the fact that even the 3 year olds were not wiggly! The day care person helped by having the kids organized and telling them to "freeze like a popsicle" LOL I have to remember that one!

"Freeze like a popcicle!" Love it! I don't think you have any reason to feel embarrassed by those designs. They're cheek art, simple and clean. And super cute and appealing to kids. If you're feeling bummed because you couldn't stretch artistically I understand but if you're feeling like you sold the client short you really shouldn't. You did a great job getting all those kids in in the time you did. Everyone got painted and left with a smile. That's what we're here for!

And an easy trick to amp up the impact of little designs is to add some long billowy swirls and curls (and a puff of glitter takes no time) for the girls. For the boys, some dagger strokes or a few long simple web lines can work. This increases the size and face area used and takes nearly no time at all, as long as you stick to two brushes loaded with white and black.

I think those are super cute! I also did a large event with simple stuff and I tell you, it was almost a bit liberating to do. I wasn't as concerned with detail and they were STILL happy and thought I was awesome!! I've already booked a birthday party from it! Very HappyVery HappyVery HappyVery Happy† so sometimes I think maybe simple is BETTER? And there is a bit of an art to cheek art. I really love your profile angry bird - I've always done him from like a 3/4 or front view and maybe this would be a bit faster. Will try this weekend at my next big event ExclamationWhat a Face

Sandie, that means you painted a face at 1.93 x minute!! I refuse to do cheek face painting because i feel it takes me less time to paint half face. You should be proud of yourself. That was very fast! Love your designs!! Could i still some? Very Happy

JJJJJ, thanks for the tips! †And thank you to all of you...you make me feel all better!! †Feel free to borrow any of the designs, as I'm sure they were all inspired by someone else at some point. †I'm working on a quick eye board right now for another gig with a ton of people!
