Avatar Movie

Post by Painted Dragon on Mon Dec 21, 2009 12:37 am

So I just got back from seeing the movie Avatar. I came away all pumped about the avatar face I could do. I went online, saw one on youtube that wasn't so hot, so I was even more pumped to make one even better.

Well, it is really hard. I tried two times, and came away looking more like a native smurf with an acne problem than avatar.

Anyone else have a go at it? Do you have photos you can share?

I'm almost embarrassed to show mine.

That thing looks really creepy anyway. I am sure yours is spot on!

PS My kids are out of school for two weeks ages 5 and 8. What age level would you say this is at?

This is the best one I have seen posted.

It was done before the movie came out, so she has it a bit off with the black and the nose shape. I could see doing something similar though in varying shades of blue, with techniques for the eyes and nose like you would use for a realistic tiger face.

I'd say that 5 and 8 were probably a bit young yet. I have an 11 year old that is sensitive to stuff, so i didn't take her either.

Has some violent sequences.

I did see this one after I finished making my face blue for the 2nd time. Might have to have another go at it once my pours get all the blue paint out of them from my first two attempts. Smile

I love that move! I've seen it three times and will see it again, Wens. I was most impressed with the meticulous special effects. Anyhow, there are lots of interviews with James Cameron & cast about how they created effects for the movie & characters on youtube.

I think Avatar will turn face & body painting on its ear when you see the chopper pilot's eye design & dark blue full body photo of Zoe's Neytiri. It would look gorgeous recreated with snaz electric blue and sparkling turquoise, but nutz, can't do it due to copyrite. I becha there will be lots of blue tiger requests, tho ; )

Anyhow, just to see if I could, this morning I had fun painting Neytiri's war paint and Jake's awesome war bird, with the 'seed' on the other cheek.

Cheers,
Susan

I think I may try this weekend. A local painter and I were asked to paint at the midnight showing on Thursday night, but the theatre forgot to advertise it, so we pretty much painted the staff. My buddy did an "inspired mask" but I didn't even get to have a go at someone.

To me, they look a bit like blue cat people, but the markings aren't defined like tigers are (but I've only seen stils, not the movie). Here's where I saw some good pics:

Has anyone seen Kat Sinclair's Na'vi painting in Brush Strokes Magazine?
The movie has only been out a week and if it wasn't for the huge snowstorm on the East Coast that began on opening night, Cameron would have made the cost of the movie in one weekend!
Awesome special effects Shocked

I think Kat did a great job with that face - easy to follow and looks very passable.

I already paint blue tigers - good I hope they get popular!

I decided to have a go at it last night... and I took pics along the way. So, here's a how-to I made. Please disregard the messy hair geek
