The newest issue of Brush Strokes is out....and guess who I saw published!!!! Congratulations Jennifer Baxter and Lone Wolf Kirkegaard. I feel like I'm part of the in crowd, that I know you from the neighborhood, the forum neighborhood. I am honored to 'know' you and to see you both published.

Congratulations, good job and keep up the great work.

Jennifer, the magazine should give you a free subscription for contributing such a marvelous design! It's artists like you that keep them in business!
That's what some magazines do, the others just send checks stapled to the inside of the front page. (Lov gettin' those checks ; )

Jennifer,
I've written for many different magazines (hard copys) in another venue, compesated well and am quite put off by the fact you weren't offered anything for your work. That says volumes about the magazine.

I'm not familiar with e-mags but would definatly check the site for contributors guidelines next time you submit your work to any of them. You work should be compensated for, period.

Contributions and contributors in the mag world doesn't mean FREE. Without work like yours the mags wouldn't sell, period, and asking for at least a subscription is not out of line.

If they don't compensate you, that is a lesson learned and seen by all on the forum. Please be picky where you send your beautiful work, because it deserves so much better.

Shannon, youv'e written so many articles complete with step-by-step photos, is no payment for submitted work standard in the face painting e-magazines?
Which ones pay and which ones don't?
Inquiring minds want to know,
Susan

Susan, which magazines that you know of pay? I only know of 3 magazines, and they are Brush Strokes, American Painter and Illusions. I'm guessing there must be more then.

Since you are getting paid, I assume that from your comment about 'gettin' those checks, can you give us an idea of how you negotiated your payment, what requirements there were to be published and what range to expect for payment.

The best part that I see for the ladies that were published, is that now they can say that they were published in an international Magazine..How cool is that!!! That's a big feather and is very impressive to the public. (to me too)

Me too. I never even thought of compensation. I sent a pic of finished work, what you all saw, and asked if they would like a how to for the December issue, in response to an SOS that went out on Facebook for content ideas.

While I see the point, and maybe for the future I'll ask about compensation, I was only jazzed about being in an trade mag. And, when I saw it was with the likes of LW, who is awesome, well, who wouldn't stoked?

Jenny,
You say Brush Strokes pays - what?
I checked out Brush Strokes for submission guidelines and didn't find any. Guess one must contact the editor for that.

If I felt that I had an article for it, I just looked inside the mag cover where they list editor and such where the mag has a contributor or submission guidelines blurb, then sent in the articles & photos as instructed and made the cover on one.

Anyhoo, I was paid for the articles except two I sent to membership magazines where I did feature articles about a special person I knew whose accomplishments were known by few.

Yes, Jenny, it IS great to get recognition in the magazine, along with bragging rights but a check is expected frosting on the cake for such talented contributors.
Susan

Oops, Jennifer, we both posted at the same time.

Sending in your original Holiday Necklace in response to Brush Strokes SOS for content ideas is even more reason to get compensation.
Susan

Susan, I'm sorry that was a poorly written sentence on my part. I meant to say first that I only know of 3 face painting magazines. Then, second because you implied that you get paid for your submissions, I wanted to know of other magazines other then the 3 that I know of that you know about. I love magazines, and I don't believe that there are only 3. Also, I'm betting that you put together awesome articles, since you are so multi talented. (I saw the canvas that you and Arla worked on...I was amazed, It was uber cool).

Sorry that my post was so misleading...and I rewrote it several times and still didn't get it right. I guess it's clear that I won't be published any time soon....I gotta learn to spell and also to paint first!!!

So are there more magazines????

Jenny
