Just wanted to mention that I have two other gigs booked this same day-both with deposits paid...one in the morning, and one about 2 hours after this event should end.

Nope. Go with your gut. You are the one they need, not the other way around. They do it your way, or they take the highway. Of course, you needn't spell it out quite like that. ;-)
You require a deposit. They pay it, or they don't. But the long and short of it is: they hire you, or they don't.
Your gut could be saving you from a heap of frustration on this.
Also, they sign that contract.
If it's a corporate gig, they may pay the final invoice as much as 30 days later. I understand this isn't uncommon. But this doesn't sound corporate. It's at someone's house.

If your terms are deposit and contract signed, those are your terms. They don't tell you how to run your business. There are ways to pay the deposit, including them paying you out of their pockets and then putting in an expense claim for it! That is bunk.

After I've had a few companies take a couple of weeks to pay, I've been a little more insistent on a deposit or they can pay the whole amount up front. That being said, if they really are set up that way, I would still insist on them presenting the check BEFORE you paint. They can make you out a check before the event and have it waiting...in fact that's a smart way to go anyway so you don't have to track down the employee afterwards. So, if the travel isn't bad, that might be a good compromise. No check, no paint and on a company account.

What should the bill look like? Have you ever made a bill for facepainting?

I have an invoice template I use. It's a Microsoft word document, I think. Just Google invoice templates and find one that works for you.
