My first paid gig, one day bad, one day good

Post by Creabella on Fri Aug 09, 2013 4:15 pm

Hello,

Today I painted for the first time for payment.
I had a gig at a fair.
Together with a friend, who has a company in doing kids birthdayparties, we had a place on this fair.
In the Total of 3 hours I was there, I painted just only 4 kids!!!!!!
And handed out some cards.
So embarassing!
It is a gig based on PPF.
I still have a second day to go tomorrow on this same fair.
My friend adviced me to step up to the people and ask them for the painting.
But here is the thing, you might not think so, but I am kind of shy Embarassed
And I feel awkward doing that.
Sigh.....

I know that would be better if I want to paint more children.
But how to overcome the shyness?

Tomorrow my girls will accompany me, so they can help me.

Does anyone have any other advice?

I know also that their is another facepainter(s) at the fair and they are doing it for free.

How can I do better tomorrow?

Saturdays are always better (as long as there isn't bad weather) and I find that when I'm painting someone there is more interest so you might consider doing a trade with a vendor that has children. You might also read my threads on pricing. I've found the best way to draw people in is have your displays prominent with NO PRICING on them. They get engaged in the designs and already picturing what they want, THEN ask price. When we had pricing up parents would literally steer away their kids.

I've actually found that free face painting, if there is a crowd, feeds my business because the people that were counting on free get there and the line is horrid so they come to me. As long as your prices aren't bad, they will come to you as an alternative.

Also, the last thing, when you do get someone in your chair try to give them something extra special like a beautiful butterfly or a tiger...even if you have to give them a huge discount and tell them that you'll give them a great deal if they send people your way that ask about the face painting.

I feel you about the PPF...I'm so getting over it. Organizers are greedy and it's so hit or miss.

I hope you have lots of pictures of your work on display. and your prices on the pictures.. I know when I did my first fair I was swamped...the line never ended...also a big sign that says face painting works well...here is my tent with the big sign[img][/img]

you're gonna have to get over that shyness...

I was at a party feeling shy, and luckily there was another entertainer there-a balloon twister...she quickly stepped in and said "come on kids, go get your faces painted! She's not going to be here all day!"

that got the ball rolling, and from then on, I've gotten myself "into character"....

a kid passes by, and I say "oh, you'd make a grrrrrrrific tiger!" or "would you like a pretty princess crown to go with your pretty princess dress"

things like that...

I see you like to paint your own face-maybe you can paint yourself while you wait for more people?

Personally, I do not paint myself...but I have no problem grabbing someone else to paint.especially if there is NO business from kids, I'd turn my attention to the adults...target the ones with tattoos first.offer to color them in, or paint on a fake sleeve...they like that.

Well, I don't have the space (as I am sharing the stand with a friend) and material.
Yesterday I did have a sign with the price up besides the display. I charge not that much in my opinion, compared with the prices I know the pro's are asking.
(In dollars $3,77 pf)
I did paint my face yesterday and I got compliments from some people and took those occasions to tell I paint at oraties too and gave them my cards.

For today both my daughters will join me.
I am planning to facepaint them on the spot.
The eldest, (she is 10) who is not shy at all, offered the help with asking people or children if they want to be painted.

Yesterday I had the display hanging at the back of the stand. And the sign with the hours and pricing was hanging in the front.
I probably should turn those around, so the examples are more in view.

This is the stand, were I have a part of the table on the left to put my stuff on:

Thanks for the advices and different points of view.
I'll make some changes. And we will see how it goes today.

I use old business cards and write on them "1 FREE DESIGN" and pass them out to the vendors kids. they HAVE to turn them in prior to being painted. No, their BFF's can't get painted free also. On those free designs, I do the flashiest, sparkly, most glittery designs I can because they are my free advertisement. Paint yourself up, paint your kids. As Nikklii26 said, engage in a dialogue with the kids """oooooo, I bet you can growl just like a tiger" etc. Just have fun!

And also, working next to my friend, they sure gave me some inspiration too, but that is for a next occasion.
I will make a picture of today or have my daughter take pictures.

It was! It was! Yay!
Today I painted 25 kids in 4,5 hours.
In comparison to yesterday a big difference!

I feel quite happy now. †And it's so true children help brake the ice!

The most favorite design was the rainbowcake-butterfly (neon rainbow)!!!!

I painted this on the eldest, she helped a lot getting people to the chair.

And I have got so many ideas now, for promoting myself.

Ella, that looks like a great face painting gig! Great job. And overcoming shyness is also a big issue for me Wink It's so good to hear that the saturday was busier for face painting.

Hum, no? What makes you think that?
I was standing, and the kids were sitting on a bar stool.
And the stool is not adjustable.

Year, now I am looking for promotional items, but sjeeez, that is so expensive!!!Shocked

Things like balloons with logo, hand Flags with logo, banners and so on.... Pffff....

Gotta save a whole lot of money....

Neutral or make it myself, but that never looks so professional as when you let a company do that for you.

Oh - sorry I was looking at the picture wrong. You sure look happy! Reminds me of my first festival (last October). It was slow & steady, perfect for me being a newbie, think I painted about 35 kids.

Iíve gotten so many free promotional items on VistaPrint (I just paid shipping) but I never see the free promotions anymore.Sad

Yes I have, but I am still looking for a nice adress for other items (like balloons and those handheld waving flags) for a reasonable price. (For me as newbie).
